Spain and Portugal

I recently retired so decided to do a road trip in Spain and Portugal in Aug Sept. Left the spare wheel behind and emptied the floor well to make room for another suitcase. Got the ferry from Ireland, 2 nights to Bilbao. 3 nights in Bilbao for their festival. Great city, cheap food and drink. Then onto a place near Torrelavega, The gps brought us up a dirt road which I knew was wrong but could not do a u turn. Ended up on top of a small mountain and turned around at last. Coming down ended up in a ditch. Thought the car was knackered. Got a lad and his dad from a nearby house to pull us out with a tractor eventually. Brought the car to a garage to get it checked. They could not have been nicer or any more helpful. They put it on a hoist and had a look. Only damage done was to the heat shield, some floor panel push in bits and the gearbox bracket slightly dented. Broken wing mirror glass and a bit of paint damage so nothing serious. Was very lucky. Then we went to Oviedo, Ribadeo, Lugo, Santiago de Compestella, Ourease, Vigo, Braga, Porto, Averio, then up through the mountains and wine country to a few places staying at a winery and small B & Bs. Then to Puebla de Sanabria, up through Valladolid, Aranda de Duero ,Burgos, Lograno, Zarautz then back on the ferry. 3667 km door to door, 5 weeks. Stayed in cities, small villages, 5 star hotel and hostels, air b&b and guesthouses. Had a fantastic time and not one argument. Weather was good, loads of different foods and drinks. The Spanish and Portuguese were so friendly and helpful. The roads in the mountains were brilliant, some villages were so tight that only one car could fit between the houses on each side, see attached pic.
Thinking of doing something similar this year but on the other side of Spain. Any suggestions.

Well, nice trip with stories to tell... there's more than "the other side" of Spain, but now you mention, "the other side" as you look at the map, would be Almería, Granada and surroundings (south-east quarter since you've visited the north-west one). Be ready for something totally different and yet equally charming.

Hi, I hadn't seen this thread until today.
I'm glad it was nothing serious and that you found such nice people on your trip.

If you come back I recommend you to visit the province of León (Las Médulas, Ponferrada, Cacabelos (Prada a Tope and Palacio de Canedo) Astorga and its Gaudí Palace, near you have Castrillo de los Polvazares where you can taste its popular Cocido Maragato and of course León Capital.
Madrid capital and surroundings, El Escorial/Valle de los Caídos, Aranjuez, Chinchón.

In Segovia, I recommend Segovia capital and La Granja de San Ildefonso (Palace and Gardens). The walled city of Pedraza is very close and you will be able to taste a good roast lamb.

Avila, the capital, is also another interesting place.

Salamanca and its automobile museum is unfortunately one of the few in Spain.

You were in Bilbao and very close there is another one that I think you did not visit. It is not well known and, unless someone recommends it, few people know about it. The Torre Loizaga Castle Museum has a good collection of Rolls and others.

Both are not museums like the ones you can see in France or Germany, but they are among the few in Spain and can be visited if you have free time and are in the area.

Now it is already very hot in Spain today 32º in Madrid, next week they say it will reach 37º, but if you don't mind I have given you many places, now you have to look for them on the internet and make a filter of what you might be interested in.

Have a good trip and I hope you like some of them and decide to visit them!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will hopefully get to visit some of those places, google will be busy soon.Yes I see the weather is mad at the moment. Friends visited Spain recently and it was in the 40s and they were advised not to go out between 11.00 and 17.00. far too hot for our Irish skin. it should be cooler in September when we are there I hope.
