MoonTrash2 - 2 Cannonball style driving event. France 2021!

Time I told everyone what happened on this event. It was tiring, gruelling and exhausting as well as being brilliant all round.

So at the outset, all the teams were given was the location of the drivers brief and this time we were also told, were off to France. This clearly added a new dimension because of Covid. It should have been run in early March 2021 but due to restrictions in France it was postponed till November 2021. Also for me personally, I started a You Tube channel as a hobby 6 months previously and decided I would try to cover the event as a vlog. As of writing this I have not finished the 2nd and 3rd vids, having had the week off after the event and doing almost nothing else Monday to Friday except going through the footage and creating the videos (218gb of footage....ouch my head!)

After completing all the forms for Le Shuttle, getting Covid passes, arranging the necessary paperwork from insurance companies as we are now no longer part of the EU, and everything else needed to prep myself or the car for this, I left Wakefield at 10am on Friday.

1st stop was pick up my co-driver as for the event. YOU MUST have at least 1 other driver so you can take a break due to the distances and roads we would be covering. So going via Sheffield we headed down to the drivers brief, which was being held at Sevens and Classics near Brands Hatch racing circuit in Kent. I had left early to give myself at least 30 mins before hand to film cars arriving at the briefing for footage. After our lunch break, Waze announced that we were 25 mins later than planned! Great. 2 accidents later we arrived in the dark and most of the 'competition' had already arrived. We both recognised some of the faces from the original running and also from the 4BallR event that we, along with 'Avel Du' participated in. My trusty SLK 350 R171,which I had used on the 4BallR was up against 2 x R8 V8's, M5, WRX STI, GTV 3.0, 911 991.1 Carerra, Quattroporte, XJR, A4 avant 3.0TDI and a 1.5Focus diesel

Briefing over we all headed to Le Shuttle and then to the first petrol station outside the Calais Eurotunnel. This was the starting location and the first of our waypoints/check points.
FRANCE....Am I ready? MoonTrash2 awaits! - YouTube

So the event is run using the app 'What Three Words' and we have to take a photo from the main check points and send on What's App to the organiser. The first running had 3, this had 14, and the first of which was 'Lunch.Means.Mystery which takes you to the petrol station, and whilst on the train we put the 2nd one in to the sat nave to we would be prepared for the off. Everyone sets off at different times and is timed on arrival at the finish. Using different apps like google maps or Waze can take you slightly different ways, sometimes on poorer roads. All the teams are in a large group chat on What's App and in the first running, we had teams drop false live locations to throw others off where they actually were. So were ready for the off.

So were at the start and leave just before 11pm Friday night, having already been on the road for almost 11 hours and covering 280 miles. The first Checkpoint being Starred.Driver.Croak which was a 862 KM or 535 mile slog down the French motorways and toll roads down the the city of Valence. Keeping a good clip going we made good progress, leap frogging some of the other cars because they were either drinking fuel, going so fast they drank even more or were going slower to conserve. Everyone approaching this slightly different and the only casualty of the event. The XJR had a puncture from a cracked alloy and carried no spare. He had taken a different approach to this event, buying a cheaper car, wrenching on it, upgrading and weight saving. He had no spare wheel! Then after about 4 hours fog closed in, sometimes thick, sometimes patch and this stayed with us all the way to Valence. Unfortunately me and my co-driver had swapped just before the fog, and about 1hr before arriving at the checkpoint we fuelled up again as he decided he still felt fresh and would push on driving. This was a mistake.

Just before Valence I punched in the 3rd waypoint and 4th checkpoint Hind.Edges.Stunt and Cheat.Possible.Unzip.

Now the fog was still with us when we were trying to extricate ourselves from Valence and my co-driver came over very tired so we swapped and then headed on the this section still in the dark. As you can see, this is not the straightest section of road, but it was what all petrol heads want to drive, fun, challenging, twisty, but in the dark when you are now approaching 18 hours it has a slightly different dimension. Ploughing on was fun for me, but the twisties along with shutting his eyes due to fatigue, gave way to motion sickness for my co-driver and after about a 3rd of the way through this section I had to slow down for his sake. Also from experience, we both knew we were not going to try to win this event. If the scenery takes us, we would end up stopping and taking in the surroundings or an area we had never been before.

and the church in the photo was our first recordable checkpoint. Also whilst we got out of the car to look at this quiet village, we also needed the fresh air. Whilst driving through the villages we realised that there was frost on the parked cars, and that the slightly damp patches we had seen on the roads could have been ice.

The next 3 way points were Morally.Purifying.Wreckage Punk.Citrus.Hairier Uninsured.Hesitant.Polar and then the Checkpoint of Mercies.Dash.Rarely

Daylight upon us made it much easier as it wakes you up. Yous senses are more alert as you see what is going on around. Finally with the co-driver feeling better we were able to start pushing on a little more and enjoying these fabulous roads. And they were tremendous throughout the event..

This was about 4 hours worth driving

With the section being so long and the twisties being almost endless we swapped a few times and got the roof down from about 9am for almost the entire day I will give you a few photos

We just kept the wheels rolling taking in the stunning scenery, almost forgetting about the timed event we were on, as whilst we were at the first checkpoint, 2 teams turned up, the A4 and the 911, took their snaps of the church and got on their way, for us not to see them again till the finish brunch.

The overcast sky started clearing and it became a fab day for a SLK

Hell we were still going off the checklist card and not wanting to cheat we did not even look where the finish line was.

Turned out where I thought we had turned right at Valence and were possible heading up North to Claremont-Ferrand with its racing circuit and extinct volcano what you can drive up, we were heading south! We were now approaching a further 250km on and 11am (now on the go non stop for 25 hours), and as we got close the this actual checkpoint (8) we had to enter the 'Reserve de naturelle national de gorges'.
Cloud Sky Plant Mountain Car

Wow what a place. By this time it was getting much busier on the roads. a Saturday morning in a national park, it was a bit like being in the Lake district with people trying to park up where they can for a walk up and down this gorge.

Unfortunately it meant no blasting through the little tunnels cut out of the rock for the road

We then had to climb the road up and out on the way to the next way point Combustion.Floating.Leashed and onto the last checkpoint Unlock.Probable.Competitions before entering the last 3 waypoints for the final checkpoint being the finish line. Oh what a chore. The drive just got better

So with me driving and believing the waypoint(s) entered in the nav by fully awake co-driver, and having looked at what the checkpoint looked like through What Three Words

we set off on the last 100k or so of the event
Sky Cloud Outerwear Vertebrate Vehicle

Yes... we hit waypoint 9 and missed entering the checkpoint, and put waypoint 11 me believing this to be checkpoint 10. Fatigue... but we did fall lucky because we went up into the high hills and not down the gorge so we got some terrific views

Then the road quality changed. I can not really explain, only that the footage will be in my 2nd video and were laughing saying that the only reason what the organiser would send us down this road, is to wake all the teams back up! The rest of the drive heading to the finish line after we got the the waypoint (me thinking checkpoint) in Saint-Just was much more simpler roads for perhaps the last 90 ins or so drive

We should have known something was not right when we got to the waypoint/checkpoint in Saint-Just, and we had to double back on ourselves to go through the last waypoints to get to the finish line, but fatigue meant it did not really register. We weren't racing, just trying to enjoy this event. The last of the roads were not challenging and the organisers had asked teams to drop live pin locations when the teams were about 30 mins from the finish line. As we hit the last road
Cloud Sky Plant Asphalt Road surface

we could see the gates in the distance, the finish line at Château les Oliviers de Salettes. What a nice place we thought as we approached
Plant Sky Road surface Tree Infrastructure

Then we realised no one was there to greet us, to celebrate that we had completed this endurance event. After going through the gate and driving round the car park, we headed back out towards this gate when the organiser popped round the corner.

The reason what they had asked for the live locations was because most of the teams had already finished and were having a brunch laid on by the chateau. He thought he had enough time to finish his eggs! I probably did not help by pushing the SLK along that last stretch, eager to finish and knocking off a few minutes.

He had chosen this chateau as a finish location because of the owners love of cars.

Shelby cobra. There was a Daytona E-Type and more, quite a collection, that to be honest I struggled to take in because at this point it was 3 in the afternoon. The event was over and having completed 710 miles in 13hrs and 52 minutes since it started at 10 pm at a Calais service station, I had been going for almost 26 hours and had been in the car for 990ish miles.
I was very tired after being on my 3rd or 4th wind of energy.

So Moontrash2-2 was over, the SLK looking a true part of the group, but we still had the journey back.

Unfortunately I have been duped. Having spoken to a fellow participant who writes for Hagertys USA, turns out vast majority of these were replicas. Still they look good and I'd be happy having this collection.

So after waking up in this fabulous location, it soon dawned that all of the teams had to get back on the road with a long drive ahead of us for the Eurotunnel. 9.30 and were away after grabbing about 7hours of well deserved, blissful sleep.
As we carried up the A6 and then joined the A31 past Dijon and whilst approaching Troyes, we realised that we still had some time to spare so my so-driver says 'that old grandstand and pit boxes are at Reims aren't they. Now that's a place I want to see,' so we set the nav for the detour, and...

Wow, what an hugely cool mecca for a petrol head to visit. I mean the place is just dripping with history.

So after taking it in for 20 mins both of us took turns running up and down this stretch of history. By this time another 3 then 4 other teams turned up with the same idea. An awesome place to chat the chat, while locals were going up and down in vehicles vairing from an old blue beetle type car, to BMW straight 6, Chevvy V8's and many
more.

So from here we just started the run home.
I rolled in at 2.30 am on Monday morning having started at 10am Saturday.
Total mileage covered 1840 over 64 1/2 hours with 7 hours (and a little light snoozing on the motorway) sleep in this time.
Vehicle Automotive design Motor vehicle Speedometer Personal luxury car

We reckoned we were on the road 41ish of those hours. Before the fog arrived on the motorway we were averaging 22.3 mpg on that first French motorway stint but overall it was about 28mpg.
The clock said our average speed was 58 mph over these 1850 miles and this was a trip that were glad we did.
The SLK is a great all round car. Apart from the body stiffness from sitting for so long, and me getting some cramp in my foot from the heavy accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake etc on the twisties the car performed admirably. We were the only convertible and so I also believe we were the only team that really absorbed the fantastic roads and scenery that we experienced.
Thanks for reading. I will upload links to the YouTube content here when I have it ready.

Thanks for sharing Davyd. Certainly looks like a great adventure. I can see why a co-driver is a necessity looking at the miles covered in such a short time. 🙂
