I had hoped to go this year but an upcoming shoulder replacement put paid to that. So, it's on the back burner til next year. Anyone fancy joining me?

I was supposed to be going this year as well. How are you intending to get there and how long for?

My plan was ferry down to Santander or Bilbao then across and back up through the alps for 10 days.

I always take the ferry. Cashwise, it's cheaper than driving down never mind the wear and tear on the car. I just stay in the Pyrenees. There are just too many great driving roads there. You can easily spend 2-3 weeks just exploring them and enjoying. For me, France is a no no after imposing a 48mph speed limit on all D roads and RN except for the dual carriageways. The last time I drove the French Alps the condition of the roads were not good, particularly the Col du Galibier.

For the alps I normally prefer Switzerland, Italy, Austria.

Would be interested in the pyrenees routes, my plan mostly consists of the N260

Why don't you just go to the Alps and forget the Pyrenees? It's an expensive ferry crossing to just drive from one side of the country to the other. Plus it's a long way to Austria from Spain. The N260 is ok but carries more traffic than other roads that are as good as or better.

I've done the alps a few times but was looking for a different starting point.

Driving down from Calais is the worst part.

Depends on the route. We've gone to South of France before and the way down (and up) can have some cracking routes. Stop off and investigate the Millau Viaduct and head east into les Gorges du Tarn. I drove round there pre-SLK, but in a 3 litre BMW 5-series which made for a very nice drive.

I did the Pyrenees in 2018. I found it very nice. It will take about 5 days to get from one side to the other over nice roads. Also nice to combine with cities like Bordeaux, Bilbao, Pamplona. I have got the GPX files laying around and can mail them on request.

Given that I have a place that's 4 hours from the Pyrenees National Park, I'd love some suggestions for driving roads (y):)

Found a pic I took of our trip. Stunning scenery

And yes, this is where the original Top Gear hosts drove their supercars when they took their cars south from Paris.
