Mensra and I completed out 2025 Blue Ridge Mountains trip this past Thursday. Efair had initially linked up with us but a situation caused him to return home the next morning. We are already discussing a 2026 trip as there were two routes in the plan we didn't get to and more that we could try. For La Bête and I, we drove 2700 miles in six days.

This was our second visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains and tackling some of the technical rides in the region while enjoying the fall changing of the leaves . The scenery was beautiful and the rides was quite spectacular and challenging in many ways. There were a few roads where I was thinking that were possibly not quite SLK friendly. I am going through about 26 hours of dash cam footage, so will be adding pictures to this thread as I work through the material.

The trip of me started on 12 October (Sunday) as I drove from my home in Kansas to Nashville TN. Here I RON while visiting my granddaughter and picking up my son Micheal. The next morning we were on the road to Deals Gap to drive the Tail of the Dragon.

At Deal's Gap.

We drove the Tail three times (Micheal twice I once) then on to The Rattler. Micheal drove The Rattler as I had already done so in 2023.

We finished the day at Wytheville where we linked up with Mensra and efair. I took this picture before we entered the hotel, so I didn't know that efair needed to leave the next day. It was the only picture of the three SLKs I was able to take.

I am in the process of trying to download my dash cam videos. It seems that my BlackVue SD doesn’t like talking to my macOS, I suspect that the BlackVue dash cam had a firmware upgrade causing the incompatibility. I used to be able to transfer via Wi-Fi directly to my NAS, but for some reason it doesn’t want to do it now. I am running a disc recovery utility to try and see what videos I can recover because I’ll be darned if I’m going to transfer them on my iPhone one minute at a time!

Great video Mensra. Thank you for posting. We were approaching Kudzu Corner at ~7:30. With the sun in the south (we were driving south) it tended to mute the colors. It also made many of the corners difficult to see as we entered them (going from light to dark). Running the Back south to north has better light conditions.

We had music playing during several of the routes so can't post on YouTube (also a lot of family discussions). I plan to pull some stills from the videos. From my phone.

Does not appear to be as challenging as the Tail.
I tend to disagree. The Back had some challenging bits. Note the Tail is 11 miles of pure focused driving. The Back is 32 miles with a mix of focused and pleasure driving. A driver on the Back can actually enjoy some of the scenery. The Back is a 55MPH speed limit so you can press much harder than on the Tail (30–35MPH) and the curves on the Tail kept your speed down. When Mensra led on the Back, we couldn't stay in sight of him. He had better brakes and more Hp. Plus my son and I were out to enjoy the drive and there was much banter between us (not 100% focused on the driving) as we moved through the course.

They are different yet each offers a unique experience. You survive the Tail, you enjoy the Back. I would recommend the Back over the Tail to those looking for challenging and scenic drive. If you wish to press your SLK to the limit then try the Tail. I truly didn't have much desire to drive the Tail again, but wanted my son to have the experience. Looking at getting my other son next year on the trip.
