My Lady and I have been trying for months to put together a trip to Denver to see my side of the family. One task I wished to accomplish were pictures of the Mercedes sports cars in family. As always, life and conflicting schedules kept moving the date back.
We finally found a date that would work that also promised good weather. All appeared good until…
…our house sitter wasn’t available. Sitting on the deck sipping our beverages and pondering the problem, my lady looked at me and said….
“Go, you need to make this trip. I will take care of the house and cats.”
With that and a few phone calls, the trip set-up. Packed my bag, pre-flighted La Bête, and then was on the road. I use one of our Roadster Bags, fitted luggage for an R172, as my go-bag. Easily packed four days worth of clothes and toiletries with no problem.
The weather was worthy of top down, but I had the top up for fuel economy and the fact that a 9-hour drive at interstate speeds would beat the heck out of me. I have driven my XK 120 several times cross-country with the top down and I wasn’t that young anymore. What looks cool in the movies ain’t as much fun after an hour or more in the wind and sun….
While it was disappointing that my lady could travel with me, there was a sliver lining………. I could stop anywhere I wanted to stop.
The Flint Hills are beautiful and rather barren. The prairie can be colorful after a rain brings out many small wild flowers. Sadly, not today

I have driven past or to Fort Riley likely nearly 100 times but never stopped to check out the large artillery piece that sat on top of ridge overlooking the interstate. So I did. The artillery piece is a M65 Atomic cannon.

Like Fort Riley, I have driven past Russell, Kansas, with its oil rigs by the interstate multiple times…. needed a picture….
I put the top down for the picture and decided to leave it down. About 100 miles later, I pulled over and put the top back up. I was in the flat prairie and a cross wind was beating me from one side. Besides I couldn’t listen to my driving tunes…
I finally arrived at the border….
I set-out at 0700 CST and arrived in Denver at 1600 MST. Not Cannon Ball Run time, but an enjoyable, fun ride. About two hours into the trip I though about how pleasant the SLK is as a high speed tourer. La Bête is just flat out fun to drive. Plenty of zip when needed, quick and smooth handling, and just plain good looking.
Had dinner at my sister’s house. Beef and pork belly over rice with bao buns. A Gin (or two or three) afterwards.
Here ended the first day……
