For those wondering about our current lovely British Weather, well My Sister is over from Australia this summer and has a canny knack of picking (or bringing) good weather for Her visit(s)....!!! :tu:

So one of the main reasons for Her visit (apart from seeing family members of course), is to do a Euro Road Trip with Me
...and earlier in the year, She forwarded a rough plan of what She had in mind for the route:

Image

Like, hey - How big can Europe be...???

Well, as was pointed out to me by a couple of Kiwi's whilst hiking in the Swiss Alps, 'Wow, you're so lucky to have all this [i.e. Europe in general] just on your doorstep'

I guess it's all relative Trev:smile:

Totally agree, the UK alone has so much offer - Assuming it's not cold, windy & pouring with rain...... :|
But then We are not only lucky to have the variety of Europe on our door step, but us in the South also have Heathrow Airport where You can fly direct to almost any where in the world... :tu:

Off Topic in Norway.....

Now that's what Icall a road trip Hope there's lots of pics as usual Trev'. :tu:
LOL – You know Me Davie, always do My best to get that “SLK on Location” picture..!!

Wow Trev now that's a trip - how long you going for 3months
I guess you will be narrowing that down a bit?
Your right Dave, may be possible to drive it in 3 or 4 weeks, but think You would need 3 months to do the above route justice:

Luckily having “done” Scotland with Davies Spring Tour & The Cornwall Byways with @DaveR, then with the Bank Manager precluded the Ireland leg, due to the ferry cost....

And going slightly off topic, We did a family 20,000 calorie/day cruise to Norway this spring and apart from the wonderful scenery, got Me thinking about a future SLK Road Trip to Norway:

This is our invading P&O 3000 passenger ship (Though as a consolation, it did serve London Pride in the bars!!):
Image

But did manage to have a chat & hand a SLK World business card to these SLK owners in Stavanger (Turned out to be American & working in the Norway Oil Industry)
Image

As You can see, the roads are not exactly busy:
Image

Image

Also has some nice back roads – As long as You don’t meet a cruise ship Tourist Coach...!!
Image

Then the view from the top deck of our ship:
Image

Would certainly consider going back with our SLK – Just need to pick the correct spring weather window..

Day_1

Day of departure – Bit of last minute packing and important to check for any stowaways:
(Especially if They don’t have a pet passport..!)
Image

Cloudy mid week 115 mile drive down to the Euro Tunnel Terminal at Folkestone, so the roof stayed up.... :frown:
But made good time in the rush hour traffic, so had time for a breakfast snack & coffee
Image

Still cloudy while waiting to board, but put the roof went down anyway & almost boarded our train on time!
Image

Our first day was planned as a relatively short ~260 mile type day just to get My Sister into the swing of hours & hours in a SLK... Plus our hotel had a nice pool by a lake and the idea was to get there for a swim...
But heading South from Calais, it was cloudy & the strong side wind made 125kmh top down driving not as pleasurable as it could be.... With a swim not going to happen, I remembered @davest4s Laon pictures from last year, so dropped into the walled Medieval Town to check it out:
Image

Image

Also has a 12th century “Cathédrale Notre Dame” Didn't go it, but meant to be as good inside as well:
Image

Quick SLK photo stop :tu:
Image

Before making it to our hotel just after 5pm

For a "end of day one" cuppa on the balcony!!

Another road trip story to read and enjoy
Have you got a route itinerary to share or are you going with the flow?

#10 ·
As this will possibly be a one off Euro Road Trip for My Sister, planning to show some of the bits that I've most liked from previous trips:
So heading down through France, for some SLK play time in the Alps R)
Then Provence & the French Grand Canyon, bit of French Riviera, Eze, and Monaco for first stage....

Day_2

The day got off to a good start, with an Otter having a morning wash & brush up in the lake in front of hotel balcony:
Image

...and the hazy sun while having breakfast by to pool, was looking more promising for a top down driving day:
Image

Unfortunately the second day of this year’s Euro Road Trip was always going to be a long day with at least ~ 430 miles to be covered & the 7 hours suggested by Google maps, which did not include comfort stops, or diversions to play in the start of the Alps (Which has a consequence of a lower average speed & longer driving time..)
Image

After some nice local roads, We re-joined the French Motorways Toll Network to get some serious km’s under the tyres. While stopped at this Motorway picnic stop, had a chat with another English Couple in a Black R172/250d also heading South through France. Passed on a SLKworld business card – But sorry to report that they passed us a while later – top up...!! :surprise:
Image

Having only mounted My new TomTom 5200 a few weeks before departing, was pleased that it was flagging up the French “Danger Zones” which normally means at some point along the road side, a grey box containing a speed camera... Not too much of an issue on the 130kmh (81mph) motorway, but very useful while on much slower urban speed limit areas.
(Plus, as discussed elsewhere, having set the TomTom to km’s while on the Euro Tunnel, it’s good that it displays what it thinks the current speed limit is – Which is useful when I’ve been chatting & have no idea!!)
Image

Having driven past “Bourg-en-Bresse” the Motorway network splits to either head East to “Geneve”, or South West to “Lyon”. Now having spent enough money on the French Toll Network for one day and even put the top-up for a hour or so due to the threat of rain & doing 130km on a cloudy days does get tiresome..
We exited around “Amerieu-an-Bugey” and took the far more pleasant “D1504” top down towards “Chambery” Stopping to view the “Chat” Mountains and the valley below:
Image

Before passing over the “Col du Chat” and stopping at this nice view point, for a cuppa overlooking the lake just North of “Chambery”
Image

Heading on into the Alps, I was planning to stay at the winter sky resort of “Alpe-d-Huez” for our second night, but after it being very booked up due to a cycle event, I thought I’d try the ski resort of “La Toussuire” instead – I have to add that the number of hair pin bends to reach this resort, had no bearing on it’s choice - Cough...!! >:D
Image

Now rather than taking the quickest route via “Villargondran” (Which was our exit route on Day_3)
the Sat-Nav was persuaded to route us via “Col due Glandon” @ 1924m and “Col de la Croix de Fer” @ 2067m
Image

Luckily My Sister was happy with R171/V6 engine & Flappy Paddles verses the now empty mountain hair-pin bends of the Alps:
Image

After a very long day of 452 miles & 8.75 hours of driving, finally made it safely to our Hotel...
(Averaged 51mph for the day, though while averaging 32mpg on the motorway it dropped to 28.5 for the hole day once the Alps kicked in – Can’t think why..??)

Looking good! Thank you for pictures. Did you buy any vingettes or tags?

Thank god I still have two weeks vacation left to use this summer. Need to hit the road...

PS. Hows the cat doing or did he/she stayed home?

Spotting an otter was a great start to the day. Sounds an amazing drive. Thank you for taking the time to write it up for us.

Day 3 - Road Trip Report:

Have to report that “La Toussuire” is very quite in early summer, but was very nice to drive around this Alpine Ski resort to take in the views on a sunny morning:
Image

So today’s route is all about mountain passes (or “Cols” as the French like to call them), more Mountain roads, more hair pin bends, plus dramatic sweeping views as long as the cloud stays above us....!!
Image

Having descended from the ~1600 m of “La Toussuire” (Lots of flappy paddle engine braking, as usaul...)
We worked our way South over the Alps, taking in one of the many Tour de France climbs of “Col du Telegraphe” (Alt: 1566m) which in its self is higher than “Ben Nevis” in Scotland...
Passed through the nice town of “Valloire” which would make a good coffee/lunch stop, but not on today’s schedule. Then started the major climb of “Col du Galibier”
Image

This pass which has a few tight hair pin bends, but also lots of sweeping bends was most enjoyable R)
(...and the Tom-Tom mounted higher up helps enormously when pushing on, to warn how sharp the next blind bend is..!!)
Stopped for a photo stop two thirds of the way up & lots of snow again:
Image

And finally the top of “Col du Galibier” along with other cars, motor cyclists & regular cyclists (Had to wait My turn to take this pic! ) – Also did the sort walk up to a view point, which is worth doing:
Image

Having stopped for lunch, the next French mountain pass on today’s hit list was “Col d’Izoard” (Alt: 2360m)
Image

Though the North side that We drove up (More hair pins & long sweeping bends as it happens!) was green with trees, the South side is very different to any other pass in this area:
Image

And while stopped taking these pictures, You could hear & see the rocks tumbling down these scree slopes..!! :|
Image

After passes through the town of “Guillestre” and just dodging a heavy shower across the valley, next on today’s list was “Col du Vars” (Alt: 2109m)
Stopping half way up – Always important to take a moment to appreciate the views, while on tour:
Image

Came across this “Refuge Napoleon” bar/hotel for a Carbonated Caffeine drink stop, before the final push to the top:
Image

Having then passing over the top of “Col de Vars” in the late afternoon sun-shine, still heading South, I was looking at staying in the town of “Barcelonnette” but while booking this trip back in February I couldn’t find anything that took My fancy, so instead climbed up more hair pin bends (such a hardship in a V6 SLK) towards the winter ski resort of “Pra-Loup”
“Pra-Loup” in spring/summer doesn’t look that great, but out Guest House just down a bit in “Molanes” had the potential for a great view in the morning sun-shine.

# SLK Driving Stat’s for today: 154 most enjoyable miles, hence the 21.4mpg and just under 7 hours of driving.

Have to add at this point that I received the first complain from My Sister on this trip..... :surprise:
“There is so much nice & varied scenery on this trip and by Day 3 She was rapidly running out of space on Her camera memory card...!!”

"Running out of room on her card".

Yup, that's something to consider but remember this. After a while, you're going to think "uh huh, another mountain". Take some time at a rest stop and cull a lot of those pics.

You won't miss them.

I know on our W Euro tour, it got to the point that "uh huh, another church". Don't get me wrong, at the time it's just such a beautiful <fill in the blank> that you've just got to have a pic.

Go ahead, take the pic in the moment. But then, after a while go back and look at what you've got saved on the card. One mountain after another mountain after another mountain.

I really like the pics and narrative and really appreciate (and acknowledge) the enormous amount of time you're donatng to take us along on your trip.

Just giving some unasked for advice NOW for some time down the road when you really do come across a scene worthy of preservation and oh no, no more room on the card

Just speaking from past experience here. YMMV :tu:

As for the "another mountain picture" - I have specially planned the trip to have different aspects to help push up the share value of the Memory Card Companies...!!>:D

Having stayed half way up a mountain hill side last night at 1500m, this was our balcony view that We awoke to this morning:
Image

After a drive up and around the actual “Pra-Loup” resort, (nothing to see much in the summer) We started heading down and can see the town of “Barcelonnette” down in the valley below:
Image

So the “Barcelonnette” area has 3 x excellent mountain passes when wanting to drive South, but today We took what I think is the most scenic one, which is “Col de Cayolle”
Image

The first section is a shady canyon section:
Image

Then a greener lower meadow section, where We stopped at the little hamlet of “Le Villard” which has a bar and road side tables with a nice mountain, church and water trough view & most important for female navigators/passengers – A decent toilet.. :tu:
Moving on, come to this upper section, with waterfalls and surrounded by towering 3000m plus mountains.
Image

While taking these two pictures I noticed the suspiciously larger boulders positioed in the middle of a green road side meadow and so decided to move on a bit sharpish....
Image

Always worth keeping an eye out for local wildlife & came across this chappy – A “Marmot” (related to squirrels, if You believe Wikipedia!)
Image

With the clouds building, only stopped briefly at top of “Col de Cayolle” (Alt: 2326m) before heading down the South side of the pass:
Image

After a selection of hairpin bends off the summit, stopping half way down at a nice lay-by with good views of the road making it’s way down the valley. ##Google Maps Link: https://goo.gl/maps/aHiowoPsSnz
(Can see the builders of this road didn’t worry too much about the terrain and just a case of a bridge & two tunnels & the river valley was crossed – This type of engineering was seen again & again in the Alps..!!)
Image

Luckily every SLK comes equipped with a “food preparation surface” in the boot and on the picnic menu today: French Bread, Blue Cheese, Tomatoes & Grapes
Image

After our alfresco lunch enjoying the view, kept heading South on some nice roads, including a section just South of “Guillaunes” which I call the "Red Rock area" and has 17 tunnels in quick succession:
##Google Street View of sign: https://goo.gl/maps/5EFKZrXovrC2
## Google Street View of the view: https://goo.gl/maps/77hh78WRwb52

Before making it to our base for two nights in “Les Salles-sur-Verdon” where our Hotel:
https://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/auberge-des-salles.en-gb.html
...though not looking that inspiring from the street, the hotel had obviously blagged (taken) the best spot when the valley was flooded to create the reservoir that now sits in its back yard.!!

# SLK Driving Stat’s for today: 117m @ 21.3mpg + 6 hours (Low mpg due to driving in low gears..)
# Road Trip Total after 4 Days: 989m @ 26.5mpg + 27 hours of driving

Day_5 (Part 1 of 2)

Day 5 Dawned sunny in Provence and our balcony lake view looked almost picture postcard perfect as the early morning fishing boat left ripples across the “Lac de Sainte Croix”
Image

After breakfast on the hotel terrace overlooking the lake, We headed off clock wise around the lake along some very pleasant rolling roads to a view point just above “Ste-Croix du-Verdon”
Image

At this view point, We also amused at the selection of plastic trees that had been planted by the French Telecommunication companies..!!
Image

Before heading down into the village of “Ste-Croix du Verdon” to this Bar overlooking the lake for a cool drink:
Image

Which also gave time to study the map for a possible jet wash:
Image

With a smidgen over 1000 miles into the trip, the poor front wheels where looking a tad dusty, not to mention the “bug road kill” on the front bumper.. :frown:
Image

After asking the bar owner, a basic jet wash was eventually tracked down in the town of “Riez”.
Following on from some SLK TLC, went in search of some Provence Lavender fields – Which possibly due to the wet weather Europe has been seeing this year, where not looking as good as previously years.. :frown:
Image

Next stop was “The House of Lavender” to pick up small gifts to take back: 0:)

Day_5 (Part 2 of 2)

Like many places in Europe & the UK for that matter, You really need more time to properly explore the area’s visited and though We only had a day & a bit as a “Provence Taster”, I’ve spread Day Five across two posts so You SLKworld peeps get a better flavour of what this area has to offer:
Image

After a brief stop at “Moustiers-Sainte-Marie” which is a real tourist trap with a church built high up in a gorge (lots of steps), with a good view over the village and a gold star strung between the two cliffs – apparently!
With the dark clouds building, We headed back to the Lake at the Western end of the “Grand Canyon du Verdon”
Image

Having driven the road that tracks along South side of the Canyon a few years ago, I wanted to explore the North “D952” road a little more & picked this hitch hiker, while stopped to study the map:
Image

As You can see, the “D952” main road is another marvel of Engineering, as it tracks along the side of the cliffs:
Image

From “Rougon” there is a dead end road, that gives access to the river & watched as the groups of Rafting people arrived. (This is something I’d really like to come back & try)
Image

Returning back along the “D952” to “La Palud” We took the “D23” clockwise to check out multiple viewing platforms that have the most impressive views of the “Verdon Canyon”.
In this pictures, can just make out the river at the bottom of the canyon:
Image

Luckily arriving just after a heavy shower and being late in the afternoon, most of the other tourist had already gone..!!
Image

With the sun making an early evening appearance, We stopped for a cuppa from the trusty flask to take in the views:
https://www.slkworld.com/members/tr...v5-albums-r171-350-interior-pictures-picture17629-r171-d23-verdon-tea-stop.html

Before doing this one-way section of the “D23” which eventually leads back to the village of “La Palud” where We started:
Image

After a sprit back along the “D952” I had planned to have a Pizza & evening drink in a bar with a far reaching views just above “Aiguines” – But having arrived, it turned out that it was the chiefs night off.... :surprise: So decided to have a drink anyway:
Image

Before checking out the view point next to the Campsite Bar, that not only looks over “Aiguines” and the lake, but further around out of shot, could also see “Mont Ventoux” on the horizon, as the sun set behind it.
Image

Still in need of food, stopped in “Aiguines” for a take away Pizza, before the short drive back down to our hotel.

Well My Sister is travelling on a Australian Passport & not a problem so far...!!
...and if Europe makes it to difficult, We have plenty to do in the UK, Norway (£££) and I've heard America has a National Park or two? (Just a case of borrowing an SLK, rather than taking one as checked-in luggage)

Another great day starting with another amazing view at breakfast. Thank you for taking the time to to share your journey. More amazing views and wildlife too.
Hope your sister is enjoying the trip too.
Did plenty of research to get nice hotels, with safe parking & a view 0:)
Yes She is: Luckily like Me She doesn't suffer from motion sickness & able to help/bully the TomTom to navigate the route I want to take...!!

Day_6

Today dawned sunny again and today’s balcony view is looking right at a different sector of the lake:
Image

Luckily after jet washing the car yesterday, these trees is the hotel car park are not of the sap dropping type :tu:
Image

Just to get Your bearings of where were heading today – Though only looking a short day on paper, We will be checking out more coast line, rather than doing a long stretch of the French “A8/E80” Motorway:
Image

Heading pretty much directly South and after just under 1,200 miles & 35 hours of driving since leaving home, We arrived at “Ste-Maxime” on the “Cote d’Azur” area of the Mediterranean Coast...
Tracking East along the coast, found some suitable SLK parking just outside “St-Aygulf” :
Image

...by the beach – Air Temp: 28’c (Bliss)
Image

Not having our swimming gear to hand, We walked along the beach to a bar at the end & enjoyed some light refinements while taking in the beach scene:
Image

We were staying East of “Cannes” and on this map You can see that the “A8/E80” would have been the fastest way to get there, but always better to follow the coast and take in the views:
Image

This is the “D559” between “Fejus” and “Cannes”
Image

...and decided to drive along the “Cannes” sea front to be seen (of course!) & see the sights....
(This pictures shows a few Road Trip essentials Inc: the Black Scarf I put over the centre console & the 100% thin cotton shirts that are more comfortable than a regular T-Shirts, which get more hot & sweaty...)
Image

On leaving “Cannes” We got stuck in a wide spread urban traffic jam that not even our TomTom could divert Us around... Even resorted to putting the roof up, so the Air-con could be used more effectively, as I was concerned at the heat soak in the engine bay... (When the roof is down I do used the Air-con to re-circulate cold air around the feet, as & when required..!!)
After passing a broken down lorry on the Motorway that was causing the traffic grid lock, finally made it to Our hotel in Eze:
https://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/hotelezevista.en-gb.html?
Paying the €10/day for nice underground parking, along with a 2 x Bentleys and a Ferrari that was also parked down their..!!

In the evening, had a spin out to “Nice” for a walk along the Prom:

Just to show other potential SLK/SLC Road Trippers where "Ville-franche sur Mer" is in France:

Unfortunately I'm runny behind with My Road Trip Reports & already moved on....:|
But every where We have visited on this trip so far, We could have easily added on a few extra days to explore more & just chill and take in the views/scenery..
But Me & Carole did touch on the area Your talking about, on our 2014 Road Trip and does look nice:
Image

Image

Your scenic morning views set me up for the day. Another driving day go envy given your report.
Sorry @Cobstar - Bit of a fail on the balcony view today:
When booking our Hotel in Eze, I did wonder why our 4 bed apartment was cheaper that other rooms in the hotel & the reason why is You need a chain saw to see the Sea View...!!!
