Hello, all. Our 2001 SLK320 has been doing OK for awhile (first sign of trouble!) but a few weeks ago, the error lights came on. We now live over an hour from the nearest dealer and having a car go in to limp mode halfway there was not was not thrilling me, especially since I'm the only driver in the house due to an injury/surgery for my wife. Towing plus initial eval would be pushing $500, so I decided to buy an iCarsoft MB 3 unit. Wow, is that a slick package for less than $200.
After doing an initial scan, it found five or six errors. Three of those errors were all related to the RF wheel speed sensor. (The other three were not significant and did not pertain to this issue.) I then purchased a new front wheel speed sensor and replaced it without too much difficulty when it arrived. Unfortunately, the error still persists. I have tried every combination that I can think of in terms of clearing the error, cycling the ignition off then on, starting the engine, driving the car a short distance, etc. None seems to have any effect. The scanner tells me that it has cleared the error, but if I go back and look at it, it shows "current and historic" and the the reading is "implausible", meaning the error is still there. One of the other errors for the same sensor shows an "open circuit".
I would simply switch the LF and RF to determine that the new wire is not faulty but they are not identical parts. So, basically the car is sitting. The only positive is, we only need one car currently due to the aforementioned surgery but after that, we'll need that 2nd car. I am going to tear apart the RF again, uninstall, blow some compressed air in there to make sure there's nothing in the way that I missed visually.
Assuming this is unsuccessful, anyone have any guesses as to how to proceed?
