Reverse light switch 1999 r170 automatic

Hi the reverse lights have stopped working on our slk. I have narrowed it down to the switch in the auto selector. If the bridge the two wire the reverse lights come on.
My question is should I try cleaning/repairing the contacts in the switch or should I buy a complete new switch?
Is a clean/repair going to be reliable?

This guy has cleaned the module successfully. German, but there aren't many words, see photos. He writes that he's cleaned it and rearmed the sliding contacts a tad. He also mentions that it's a pain in the a** to get to the module because the selector must be removed for which the connection to the transmission must be loosen from under the car.
