So i took ownership of this fine automobile last night, drove her home with the biggest smile on my face ever. There are a couple of right off the bat jobs that need to be done

  • reattach mirror to the windscreen (glue is on its way)
  • clean the drain holes (i have a trombonebrush)
  • figure out a phone holder solution i actually like
  • replace bonnet gas lift thingy
  • take her to get a really deep clean
worth saying that this is the first time i will have ever worked on a car and i have no idea what im doing really but its gonna be an adventure.

i have to say shes in amazing condition and that is entirely thanks to the excellent care of @Cerberus Velvet

Ok first silly question…

I need to reattach my mirror to the windscreen. I managed to pop out the “button” but I don’t know which way it “up”

doesn’t look like it matters but I dunno for sure…

anyone got any ideas?

You need to try it!
IIRC the instructions are rotate 90 degree but can not be sure clock or counter clock wise...so attach it to the mirror and rotate the mirror not the base, just like it is glued!
Mirror is vertical and you rotate clockwise to become horizontal under the base, not counter clockwise - over the base.

Looking at your pic the base with red arrow showing UP - the roof - needs to 90 degree any direction as this way will fit in the horizontal piece of the mirror. And when the mirror is attached and rotated will be held by the assembly.

Mirror gluing tip: There is NO WAY the surface where you glue the mirror base can be too clean and prepared. Isopropyl alcohol can be used (needs very little) and using a heat gun (carefully, low temp, or even a hair dryer will make sure the surface is totally dry. No greasy fingers near the glass or the base, and it will probably be stuck "forever". Don't forget that the base needs to be scrupulously clean as well...

Bonnet lift is "special" in the way it can be extended into "service mode" - perhaps not obvious first time you open the bonnet. Make sure you don't miss that when changing it. A suitable wood stake (broom handle" can come in handy while changing the "gas lift thingy".

Happy days!

Ok so a bit of an update…

mirror is suitably reattached which is great !

I also had a go at clearing the rear drains. Passenger side cleared no problem. Drivers side not so much. The end of my brush broke off somewhere at the end of the pipe. So it’s still draining but only slowly. I need to find where the end of the pipe actually is to be able to extract the brush and ensure it’s clear.

anyone got any ideas how to find the exit end of the drain pipe at the back. I know I was right at the end where the brush came off so I just need to find the end of the pipe and I can probably extract the brush and any other debris at the same time.

so I would say todays first adventure was 1/2 a success

There are some 3D printable options for phone holder, cupholders and rear dash cam mounts on this forum :)

Good news! I have managed to clear out the drivers side rear drain! It was immensely satisfying as the final push and twist of the “drain declogger” from the pound shop suddenly lurched further into the hole and the car had a little wee on the driveway. Flushed it through with some warm water which also went through a fast as I could pour it in.
Happiness can come from such simple things.

still need to do the front drains (need to order a wiper puller).
Then it’s phone holder solution (like always it’s finding something I actually like)

iv taken her to a local car meet (she was the only slk of any year to attend) not alot of interest but that was kinda to be expected.

In other news i might have sourced a spare nearly new set of front wings from a local merchant. im waiting to hear back.....

i love this car!

funny you should link that, i have already got the page bookmarked lol, cant do the wings for a little while now tho, due to a distinct lack of funds to continue lol.

tho i am looking at how to sort the rear arches as well, seems im gonna need a pile of tools i dont have at the very least lol

So I said I would post some pictures of the new wings…

they are currently in my study as the safest place to store them

Don’t think I could have got cleaner ones if I tried!
So my question is what “extra” prep can be done before I attempt to mount them to ensure there longevity?

I have the parts in my basket awaiting pay day lol.

that photo is exceptionally helpful tho. Don’t suppose you have a write up of fitting them?

The '32 was in the bodyshop at the time and the 'shop boys fitted them. As I understand it, it's a case of drilling out the old spot welds and using the new holes as locators for the bolts - you'll be fine (y)
I will be getting a set for the 320 as well somewhere down the line and I'll be doing those myself - how hard can it be? :D

thanks to a break in the heat i finally got round to starting on the wing replacement....

have to say that so far this has all gone quite well.

removed the drivers side wing (so far so easy)

wing was nowhere near as bad as it looked on the outside

then i removed the very rusty mount from the bumper side

after that i kinda sat on the floor scratching my head how to start sorting out the mess.

a quick conflab with @Cerberus Velvet and i was back at it.

i quickly put the new mount into the bumper (i had to improvise a washer but that wasnt a problem)

then it was time to get rid of some rust!
i started with the upper mount attacking it with a small pick and then a wire brush on my drill till i had got all the loose stuff off and was left with a surface thats ready for rust treatment and paint!

next step is to get some kurust and primer etc then see about getting the new mount mounted....

all in all im really pleased with my progress today.

totally random question, but anyone know what size the "kompressor" lettering on the wings is? i need to order new letters and am unsure of the size.

bonus points if you can confirm the slk 230 for the back too :)

Ok dirty edit….

finished work and did a quick measure

kompressor on the wings is approx 1.8cm tall
Slk230 on the boot is 2.5cm tall

thanks all

#30 ·
My replacement wings don’t have the all important kompressor lettering but I was actually thinking of swapping out the chrome letters for Matt black. So black car with Matt black lettering…. I figured it would be pretty stealthy looking (like a ninja).

Ok a bit of progress this evening

managed to get the kurust done and a layer of primer on.

also managed a test fit of the new wing

the mounts are fiddly little things to get done but iv got 1 hole marked up…. Followed by looking for the drill bit I need…. Of course I don’t have that size of drill bit and it’s too late to grab one…. So play stopped till the morning…

some lame photos for you
