Simple tray phone holder

Hi all, we’re heading to Dorset, taking our SLK on its first long run since bringing it back to life, and realised we have no phone holder. We need one for navigation.
I didn’t want a screen or dash mounted holder blocking the view and looking ugly, so decided to see what I could do with the centre tray drawer.
With a few bits of MDF, and a an hour and a half spent, we have a solution that works well and is really simple.
It’s not for boy racers bragging at the traffic lights, but will work well for us older cruisers.

Here’s the link to the making video:

Nice mod and nice vid too!

I would think that it still might fall back under hard acceleration. You wouldn't be able to close it with my idea but: have a larger "back support" and attach a piece of velcro to that back and the cell case and...solid as a rock. As said you wouldn't be able to close it but with MY driving style, it would constantly be falling back from the acceleration if there wasn't velcro there.

BTW, I just use a specialized holder that slides into the cd slot and that holds my equipment.

Thanks for watching the video Len.
The phone flies off into the car under hard acceleration so it needs improvement, but I can be light footed when using it for now.
Being able to close the tray is a priority for me. I mentioned early in the video the need for it to grip the phone somehow, so maybe a tight fit would help, or maybe using rubber or velcro as you suggest.
Different phone cases will be a challenge with this too.
I‘ll use it for a while and think about improvements.

Interesting regarding the CD slot, i didn’t know you could get a holder to fit that so thanks for the heads up. I quite like listening to CDs occasionally so it may not be best for me.

That’s impressive Len. I use an Aux input from the phone a lot of the time, for the navigation and Spotify, so it wouldn’t be a big loss.
My better half does like her Ed Sheeran CDs though….

Love it Steve (y) I feel a Mark 11 version may be coming soon though. God's own composite is hard to beat sometimes. Light, easy to work, and it grows on trees!
