It is possible to replace the standard MB rear view mirror with an aftermarket one if you can locate the right adaptor. Why would you want to do this? Well you might want to replace the standard mirror with auto dimming, or your auto dimming mirror may have leaked.
The MB mirror is mounted on an elliptical button. Slide the mirror on sideways and twist and it locks....see YouTube.
Some earlier VW/ Audi cars had a similar system but the button was round and the fastening was slightly different. There is an adaptor for the VW that can be used on the SLK. Amazon.com list it at about $25. Screen shot attached. It's there on eBay. com on a couple of sites at about double that price. I got mine in the UK for about only $5!!!!! (Steelmate Automotive UK Ltd • enquiry@steel-mate.co.uk--mount 03)..... they don't export though!
The adaptor needs attaching to the new mirror with your adhesive/method of choice. It simply slides down on the button and is locked with the grub screw. The only change you need to make is to replace the existing grub screw with a longer one - 20mm M3 will do the trick.

My mirror is supposed to auto-dim but doesn't, and the goopy stuff inside it is slumping. I found the above adapter on Amazon. Now I'd like to find a good mirror that auto-dims and will control the auto-dimming driver's side outside mirror. Do you know of one? Do you think this one will work?

This is what I've fitted. Skoda Oktavia Seat Leon VW CC Golf Innenspiegel Spiegel automatisch abblendbar | eBay

Obviously it's not integrated into the cars system as such and I'll wire it into the glove box light.
Happens to match my interior. But you could used any Gentex mirror. Seems they are the main supplies to most manufacturers.
Also the mount needs hacking around a bit since the adaptor aperture needs to be totally clear because of the distance the the screen button protrudes through the aperture.

@fritzwis , unfortunately I've no idea how the dimming mirrors are controlled in those cars that have them. Presumably you have to hit a button under the mirror to switch it on? In that case it will switch both mirrors on at the same time. The one I fitted had a + and - and bunch of other wires presumably integrated into the CAN for the car it was meant for.

@fritzwis , as already mentioned by another member somewhere, it is doubtful you could fit the Gentex. Have a look at the 320 circuit diagram about page 63. It's all a bit horrendous. You'd be better trying to get a refurbish as above I reckon.

send your mirror to radar-mirror.com to fix the lava lamp effect. His prices are somewhat reasonable.
The only other place that does it (which is the OEM solution) is to send it to Sybas in Holland, MI. Its considerably more expensive than radar-mirror to do what amounts to be the same work.

If you need something cheap, then just buy a manually dimming Crossfire mirror off eBay, etc.
