Hello I have an 2001 SLK 320 and I’m having trouble closing the driver side door. Before it was a slam that was needed but now no matter what it won’t close at all, instead there is a soft thunk everytime. Is this a door latch problem or trim that is loose?

try realigning the windows, sometimes they sit too high. then the door won't close.
if youre unlucky the stumps at the end of the windows fell off.
you can try kitting it yourself or get new windows..

1. Is there any vertical play for the door when open?
If so, the hinges need tightening and adjusting.

2. Door lock fixing to pillar. There is a small amount of adjustment, but is there any play in it?

To see where the door meets the fixing, cover fixing with chalk and examine where it strikes.

There is a lot of play with door latch like it’s loose I went in with a screwdriver moving it up too the lock position and back, from what I noticed there no audible click when moving up to the lock position unlike the passenger door which works fine. No vertical play though it swings open and close perfectly aligned just won’t latch.
