I am selling my beloved SLK 320 (R170) manual, 116K miles on the clock.
HEADLINE ISSUES (to save you time reading):
Very slow brake fluid leak which started within the last few months requiring occasional fluid check/top up. After investigation this is apparently coming from the slave cylinder in the gearbox bell housing.
Yaw sensor failed some years ago, I’ve had it disconnected except for MOTs.
Slow oil leak since forever as noted on MOTs (pretty normal for a car this age). I don’t need to top up between services.
Rust in the usual places (arches)
This is a 2001 R170 SLK 320 in Prismatine Green, with Siam Beige and Charcoal interior. It’s the 3.2 litre V6 coupled with a manual transmission. All in all, this is a very rare combination, with the colour being a real head turner.
I have owned this car since July 2020. When I purchased the car, the exterior was in good shape, the interior needed some TLC, and it wasn’t accelerating right.
I narrowed the acceleration issue down to the MAF sensor which I replaced myself. I had £800 of servicing done, and I fixed up the interior using official Mercedes paint, as well as fixing things like the worn gear knob and worn leather bolsters. I have loads of interior paint left over ready to reapply including a sealed bottle that will be included with the sale. This paint isn’t cheap at around £40/bottle but it’s a perfect match!
Since purchase I have made other modifications such as more modern look head lights, LED rear light clusters, modern grille, Bluetooth head unit, CarPlay/dash cam screen, footwell lighting and so on.
She’s been kept well serviced and MOTs up to date, with only minor issues dealt with like worn tyres or headlight alignment.
In 2022 (IIRC) the yaw sensor failed, symptoms were the dreaded wheel lock up whilst driving. I tried replacing it with a refurbished unit and having it calibrated. Mercedes were unable to calibrate it for some reason. Since then the sensor has been disconnected the whole time I’ve driven it. I only reconnected it for the MOTs to remove the warning light. I cannot fathom what difference this has made to driving as it seems the same to me. I guess I drive too sensibly for it to matter!
In 2023 I had issues with her occasionally not turning over on start. I narrowed this to the crank sensor which I replaced with a Bosch unit. Since then she’s started without missing a beat.
As far as the body condition goes, it’s in pretty decent shape aside from the dreaded rust on the arches.
As you can see from the MOT history if you look up it, she’s been my daily driver, and I’ve had no issues save from the above mentioned sensors. General maintenance and tyres have been all she’s required.
The car comes with two keys and a folder packed full of paperwork including the original sales invoice.
The car is being sold because I have bought an SLC. I love this SLK, the colour makes me smile every time and I intend to have the SLC wrapped in the same/similar colour! Driving her is a joy especially when the roof is down. I will certainly miss the rawness of the V6 and the manual transmission.
This car can be driven away and used daily as it stands, though I’d recommend getting the brake fluid leak looked at sooner rather than later. She has an MOT until September.
Price wise I am looking for offers in the region of £1600, reflecting her rare status as a manual V6 with unusual interior and exterior colour, however I am open to sensible negotiations with an enthusiast or collector. I’m looking to sell this to someone who will cherish her and fix her up. I am not in a rush to sell and so I won’t entertain silly lowball offers. If you would like to reach out to me to discuss seriously, please send me a PM.
Please note the personal reg is being removed, and replaced with the original Y39 MAW.
Thanks for reading!
