Hey all, I want to remove metal roof shell from R171 so i can do proper paint job on edges (paint got chipped at rubber seal so i don't think body shop will go a good job by masking seal and painting on top, so i want to do it proper way as painting and polishing as separate part)

Did any one try that thing? Any comments i dont have aliment tool so was hoping to do marking inside to see where it should be positioned back and hopefully put it back so it still works and not leaks after such manipulations.

Let me know if im crazy enough to do it or its ok to mess with roof?

possibly yes and try to load more clear coat on edges, not sure though if top rear windows seals are easy to remove (even if roof half open)

forum does not send me notification in time :(
so section of roof that has chip is rear on that goes onto folding glass (exactly in middle) no seal there alredy unless i stip folding glass and / or try to paint roof when it partially open which will give good working condition but if taping or bagging messed up my interior will be ruined as this will not be like taping to closed windows, still debating what will be best choose. From one perspective we build and tune aero space projects so tuning roof position is not that scary but then anything that can leak will leak :( though MB (or whoever designed it as same roof is on 3 makes) made very good design to keep waterout

The C-pillar panels can be easily unbolted from the frame - there are shims in place so put a blanket down to catch them and try to count how many shims are where. The black plastic panels can be slid "up" to remove them but this requires some force - be prepared to replace them since they are easy to damage. I have never removed the main roof panel so I can't say how hard it is but it will likely require alignment upon reassembly.

The C pillar trims can be easily removed.
1. Open the roof part way and support the front edge on the windsheild header. I use a full roll of paper towel on end. This gives clearance for removal.
2, Get a small block of wood about 2 x 2 x 3 and a light hammer.
3. Put the long axis of the block of wood along the bottom edge of the C pillar trim and gently tap the block of wood to move the trim up. It only needs to go about 3 in to release it from the tracks that it is locked into.
Replacing them just requires care to make sure the slides in the trim go under the tracks as you push them down. Once fully engaged then tap from the top with the block of wood to reset. DO NOT set them too low or they will interfere with the truck opening, Mark the top with a strip of making tape on the top of the window before you remove the trim is one thing I learned the hard way to do,
