I managed to interrupt the roof closing today, I parked and started to close the roof (SmartTop one-touch) and with brain in neutral, turned the ignition off as the roof started to cycle. Well that b*ll*cked the system and everything stopped. Driver window (RHD) made a couple of judders. I started the car, had to manually close the roof by holding the close tab but the driver window and mini window dropped 1" and wouldn't close however much I tried. I tried window down/hold/window up/hold but it didn't work

When I got home and parked on the drive I Googled R172 Window reset and here is what it gave me. I have highlighted the bit that is important as it worked first time.

To reset (resynchronize) the windows and fix the "one-touch" auto-up/down function on a Mercedes-Benz SLK (R172), you need to reteach the window control modules their upper and lower limits.
Follow these exact steps:
  1. Turn on the ignition: Insert the key and turn it to position 2 (or press the Start/Stop button twice) without starting the engine.
  2. Lower the window: Press the window switch to the first detent (do not click it down all the way into the "auto" position) and hold it down.
  3. Hold at the bottom: Once the window is fully open, keep holding the button for an additional 5 to 10 seconds.
  4. Raise the window: Pull the switch up to the first detent (manual mode) and hold it.
  5. Hold at the top: Once the window is completely closed, continue holding the switch up for another 5 to 10 seconds.
  6. Repeat for other windows: If needed, do this for each individual window switch.
I could have RTFM, but I'd have to open a massive PDF and searched and got distracted and ending up reading about something I didn't need or want to know right now 🙄

Anyway, it's the "don't use the auto position" bit that seems to be the important instruction. Now I seem to need to reset the SmartTop as its become twitchy.

For R170 you don't need to sync the windows, as they don't drop when opening the door. On R171 you need to do that, otherwise the glass will rip your rubber seals. On R172 you can't/need to sync your windows, but it don't hurt. But I might stand corrected. Never ever heard about a need to sync windows on a R172.
