Morning everyone, and I hope you all are enjoying the BH weekend.
For me, yet more woes with the SLK first time top down on motorway after a bit of work;was all good albeit lively as I don’t have the addition of any wind deflection options but it was lovely. The issue was prior to that at a hand wash , to my embarrassment had water splashing in the cockpit see photos. Not certain what’s the issue as everything seems ok.

Check that the quarter light is completely shut, as the water in the photo appears to be coming from that area.

Is the headliner damp at all? There’s a problem where the sealant bonding the roof side panels fails. Have a look around, there’s plenty of info on it, and I’m pretty sure @Wil_AMG has a video guide on the repair.

Also any signs of water ingress in other areas?

Have you cleaned and treated your roof seals, including the vertical rubber fixed to the triangular glass?

How ? When ? Got the car 2 weeks ago and this was the first wash done since . I have in the meantime became aware of the rubber seal issues and I aim , provided I will keep the car which seems rather unlikely if these problems keep happening, treat the seals

Well it was a hand car wash nothing too fancy but they do use jet washing equipment next time Inwill be careful to mention it to them but I was staggered by the amount that sprayed in , they weee good to wipe it all after and I’ve stopped further and inspected the rubbers etc without identifying any clear points of ingress.

Yes. He’s waiting for me to bring the car for inspection as he is rather suspicious of the - very good garage - that identified the oil leaks , didn’t even mention the latest water ingress issues…. I’m tired as worked loads and don’t think I can this weekend to do the 2 hours drive there and two back home after dropping the car … I’m in touch with him though…

@marius.vrancean.logi have you looked at the black sealant strips along the top of the roof. DONT poke and prod them but check they have not started to separate from either the central roof panel or the side panels.
Checked and they seem in good condition. It’s from the quarter lights , I believe but even after a proper check i still couldn’t find the issue

No @RobbieG, you just have a long memory like me:
Replacing rear quarterlights | How a Car Works

Quarter lights, or quarter windows, are small, often triangular panes of glass located near the main side windows of older cars, frequently used for ventilation by pivoting open. They were common in older vehicles but are now rare due to modern climate control and safety engineering. They are often found on classic cars but can be damaged, requiring repair or replacement. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Facts About Quarter Lights:
  • Function: They operated as vent windows, providing airflow, and were sometimes referred to as "wind wings".
  • Location: Typically found in front of the door window, though sometimes present in the rear.
  • Disappearance: They were phased out largely because of the rise of air conditioning and to improve crash safety and reduce wind noise.
  • Vulnerability: These windows are frequently targeted during vehicle break-ins, making replacements common

Contrary to your diagram, I always thought that the term "quarterlight" referred to a small opening window contained within the same door frame as the main window.

As well as providing additional ventilation, they also meant that manufacturers only had to accommodate a simple rectangular shape in the window winder mechanism.

I think one of the main reasons they were phased out was due to the fact that they were a security weak point, as a thief could simply break a small pane of glass then reach in and unlock the door.

You might want to check to make sure that your window is sequencing shut completely after you close the door. When you initially open the door, the window moves down slightly to allow it to clear the weatherstripping, then when you close the door it moves back up to seal. Sometimes that sequencing can get cancelled by something like disconnecting the battery or dead battery. The fix is usually to just cycle the window with the switch, and hold it for a few seconds after it reaches the full up position. Just a thought.

Will try them. So far cannot see a single thing wrong apart from significant water coming in high levels both sides…

Check all your rubber seals using a regular water hose - I marked all the points where water can enter the vehicle. Also, if your roof is misaligned, it will leak
As mentioned earlier in this thread, the black sealant strips along the top of the roof. Silver parts is a known issue.
