Hello all,

New to these forums and forum life in general. Heard great things about the support of this group so figured "heck let's try"

I bought an '05 SLK 55 AMG a few weeks ago from an exotic car dealership. I knew a 21 year old performance car would likely have current issues but never figured id be in the frustrating pickle I am in.

Long story short, car is currently throwing a C1000 code stating 'Control Unit N47 -5(ESP And BAS Control Module) Is Defective". Of course, this shows additional codes for other modules, but they all almost point to the ESP module.

This error occurs randomly after clearing. So far, I have replaced the battery with an AGM one, changed some burnt out fuses, and removed the ESP module and gave it a proper cleaning (it wasnt very dirty). None of this has solved it.

I read two posts about this issue here already. It seems the move is to swap some coils and harnesses but it doesnt seem to fix it permanently for many folks here. My question is...

How likely is it that the ESP module itself has become faulty? I wonder if the circuit board, perhaps old soldering, is to blame?

Before I spend $400 to a module rebuild shop, I figured id ask what others here thought about this theory.

I would replace the spark plug leads for cylinder 5 and 6 to start with. They can get oxidized and emit EMI. Probably the same for the ignition coils. There are many more posts about this EMI phenomena than the two you have already been reading. It's not uncommon. I replaced the battery, the ESP-module, Front SAM and the CGW (Central Gateway) but that didn't help.

I havent. And here I thought this was a rare problem with little information. I never would've thought that any part of the engine would be part of the problem. I will surely follow your suggestion. I still plan to mail my ESP to ExModEx. See if they find anything wrong with it.

If they dont, that definitely narrows things down for me.

Let us know when fixed and the cure.

Good luck.
