SLK32 pointers and likely expenditure

I’ve just more or less completed a fairly extensive restoration on an R129 SL500. A nut and both underbody restoration. Been looking out for something else to fettle, maybe do a full underbody restoration too.

There’s a 32 for sale relatively near me that’s piqued my interest. It’s done 116k miles but more than half of that was in its first 4 years. It has been used year to year but for the last 6 years (current owner) covering low low miles. Not much servicing latterly either except a recent service with plugs etc. S/C oil change 5-6 years ago.

I see there is an extra layer of complexity attached to them but are they generally still a reasonable proposition and fixable without deadly costs? I know the M112 a bit but not with a S/C. ie What are the costs attached if the S/C needed bearings, or should it still be ok? Also, is it mainly just springs and struts that are different to non AMG? (ie I’m wondering if there’d be extra difficulties or costs regarding for example underbody/drivetrain restoration).

Thanks

I have a 32, have not seen a 320. My guess is that the condition of the 32 will matter more than how it differs from the 320. Some of the parts for the 32 might be harder to find.

I have been slowly restoring my 2003 SLK32 over the past 7 years that I have owned it. I find the parts relatively cheap compared to my other Mercedes vehicles. I have been thinking of getting into R230 but the extra expense and complexity has me hesitating. There is a wealth of DIY articles on this website and Pelican Parts. Other differences besides the suspension, I believe include the seats, rear spoiler and some different trims. FCPEuro.com and pelicanparts.com are my go tos.

One other note -- the intercooler pump and crankshaft pulley on the 32 apparently had design flaws and are known to fail. They've both been replaced with new & improved versions with new part numbers.

Thanks v much for the replies. Is the suspension just the springs and shocks that are different? Maybe thicker anti-roll/sway bars?

what’s the position with brakes as far as what the 32 uses?

thanks

Looking at FCPEuro for the brakes, the discs are 30mm larger and use a different kind of pad. Each about $25 more expensive than the SLK320 versions
