Hello all,

I am looking to procure an SLC43 in the near future, and I was wondering what common faults and issues I should be on the lookout for with these. What maintenance items should I be looking to check if they’ve been done at what mileages?

I think if we complied all of this information in this thread it could be a great resource for others as well!

Side note: The car I have driven and am looking into now shifted very hard when I first started using the paddle shifters, I guess because the vehicle was cold? As it warmed up there were no issues. Is this normal, or is that a potentially expensive issue?

Thanks everyone!

I would also try and test drive a post MY2013 R172/55 just to compare...?

The Face Lift R172 has slightly newer Tech, but doesn't have the V8 Sound Track ..

I believe the 9G box has shift patterns for "Cold, Warm & Hot"

After a yearly IAM training season on track, I found that I needed to do a 9G Gearbox Reset, due to a rough change from 3rd to 4th when the gearbox was Hot...!!

Talking of the 9G Box, I changed the fluid at 32k miles ($$$) Don't wait till the recommended 50k, un-less you only do steady Freeway miles ..?

UK SLC43's have a Rear LSD as standard - This fluid should have been changed at 1k.

Service history for any Mercedes is important, especially for the Fall Fat AMG versions. ✅

Tyres also make a big difference. I've gone for a more comfortable option. But I find my SLC43 needs the same make & model of tyres on all four corners, otherwise the handling can be messed up....

Looking at the service history, the car has just over 60k miles and no transmission fluid change noted on the history. Would I be correct in negotiating that off the listed price or seeing if they will perform the work (for sale at a dealer)? I don’t see the diff service listed either.

That's the 55 versus the 43. I was asking about the pre and post 2013 55, which I thought the poster was referring to?

When you look at adverts, can normally see the subtle differences in the pictures...

If buying from a UK MB Dealer, I straight away ask for an Oasis report, before travelling to see it - That apart from the options, shows when it was manufactured:

So I was looking for a replacement Winter Coupe and the W204 had the same stalk change around mid 2012. Never did find a decent 350 example in a colour I wanted, so eventually plumbed for a C300 with immaculate service history, but from the Oasis Report I knew it has sat (hopefully not in a muddy field..) for 6 months before being registered....

Also one SLC43 I looked at, had sat for over a year before being registered...!!

Hence my post MY2013 was a bit of catch all sweeping comment.

Back on the SLC43 thread, the 43 engine seems to have good reliability and I do enjoy driving it (y)
