facelifted SLK 230 R170 stacked pulley mod?

Hello there! I have facelifted SLK 230 from 2002 so with Eaton M45. The first owner 20 years ago installed Carlsson CK23 which main part is larger crank pulley - 215mm. The ratio for s/c is now 3,11 (s/c pulley is orginal one 69mm). On the dyno result was 221HP & 325NM of torque at crank. Carlsson promised 230HP/340NM with this kit. Considering an age and the fact that every car is slightly different, I would say my result is not that far off. I went to local tuner shop to explore ECU tune possibilities. The guy recommended to install smaller s/c pulley first and then ECU tune. I see that there are 2 available options locally: 62mm or 65mm. Does anyone made stacked pulley mod for facelifted SLKs R170? What else needs to be changed to have it worked?

The refresh r170 (2002-2004) has a smaller pulley that is press fit to the input shaft.
The ones you mention are probably for the pre facelift models.

Indeed, there are slightly smaller pullies that can be fit to this unit, and require the supercharger removal. If going that route, have the blower refurbished with new bearings and ported, and have the refurbisher press on the new pulley. This will ensure reliable operation and max boost. Both pulley solutions are spinning it over the mfr rated max rpm...

Have a tune put on it by a quality shop that knows these cars, and probably worthwhile to upgrade the intercooler to dissipate the added heat from pressure.

One tripping point in all this is it is possible to make enough boost to overload the mass airflow pressure sensor and fault out the ecu. There was a diode patch fix to solve this, might research that.

Assuming you get this all done and debugged, You might get to about 240 hp in cool weather, beyond that will probably take bigger injectors and other mods. If you love R170s and want more performance, don't pour money into the 4cyl, just find a nice SLK32 AMG, its 350 hp stock and not much more $, you get upgraded trans and suspension too.

Happy top down spirited motoring, reliably.

SLK32 is waaaaay (and some more) out of budget. Where I live, nice post-fl SLK 230 cost around $5000 while SLK32 starts around $16000 and can go even higher. I don't think that bumping my current horse power by another 20-40bhp will take me anywhere near SLK32 budget. Plus I have 6 speed manual so I think 240-260bhp for this car would be more than adequate

Indeed, the manual is nice to have, and yet another limitation.
Check the manual max torque input, it is not as robust as the auto. You are probably fine at 240, but beyond that do your research before breaking things . (the torque limit is just above that)

Also, it is mandatory to have an engine properly tuned when making boost increases, as the engine can run lean and have preignition. There are tales in the forums of melted pistons and ruined engines.

I have had 4 230s, and currently have 2. Have also researched the path to more performance and decided to leave stock as the risk and cost wasn't worth the benefit to me.
There is no shortcut, to do this properly:
Pulley kit and tune, $800-$1300
Supercharger rebuild and porting, $1000
Larger intercooler, $500
Will need the MAF sensor diode mod and possibly different spark plugs .
240 ish hp can cost $3k easily. 260hp is more expensive.

In the USA, the R170 values are quite high for very low miles (<20k) cars and a 30-40k mile '32 is $16-17k , however trail off considerably after 50-60k. Looking at current Autotrader listings, a 60k mile SLK230 is about $9-10k, and a 60k mile SLK32 is about $13k - a $3k spread, which is a bargain for another 150hp and everything that comes with it. (and $3k can easily be spent on mods to the 230)

Not trying to pour cold water on your fun, but give good suggestions based on research and experience. Enjoy your top down motoring!

according to my research here cost would be way lower than that. From pulley kit I just need smaller s/c pulley which cost up to $70 including shipping and replacement. S/c rebuild in company that specialize in it, it is about $330-$350 plus labour at workshop to replace the s/c (I guess $200 tops). But then again it is just couple of bearings replacement plus aluminium polishing, so I guess basic refurbishment can be done by any workshop that has a press. ECU tune ranges from $450 to $600 in the city where I live.

And about this MAF sensor diode, do you have any link to it? I've seen some posts/article about it but not that much details.
