Radio Install with Backup Camera

Installed a new Bluetooth single din radio with backup camera today.

I followed the radio installation instructions in another thread which worked very well. I did find that the harness I bought came with RCA connections for the speakers. They were very easy to connect but did not get very loud, only about 50% volume when turned ask the way up. I cut the RCA plugs off and wired into the normal speaker wires and all solved. Hope this helps someone else.

Also installed a backup camera. There is not much on that for the R170's. I could not figure out how to get a wire from the cabin to the trunk. I found that if you take off the striker plate at the top of the door jam on the passenger side, pull back the door seal then pull back the carpet a bit there is a wire easy to the trunk. Just leave plenty of slack for the trunk lid motions. A 5 meter cable was long enough.

The reason the RCA pre-amp outs likely didn't work is that they weren't 4 volts. Most pre-amp outs are 2 which isn't enough to drive the Bose. If you use Crutchfield, pre-amp outs are a searchable function.

It is a cheap one off Amazon. If I remember correctly, it cost me about $70 for the radio and a wiring harness. Cheap enough to try and the quality is good enough. It does not do carplay or Android Auto though.

Hello OP, I have been looking at this unit myself, can you give us a follow up on the head unit? Can you use the Metra adaptor plug on this unit? I came from Crossfires and we would run RCA for the rears and splice in so you have front to rear. I believe you only use the fronts on these cars and then its slit to the 4 speakers from there. Thanks in Advance.

Radio is adequate. I won't say it is wonderful but does the job. Bluetooth works well. No Android Auto or Carplay. Backup camera works well. Don't remember exactly which adapter harness I used but it was one of the 2 that are in all the other writeups. You could run more speaker wire and split the speakers but for such a small car I'm not sure how much you will notice.

Hi mate, you have one of the few threads on running a backup camera on an R170.

You mentioned you routed the cable through the door jam wire loom. How did you get the cable from the head unit to the door jam?

Nothing too fancy. I have a plastic cover above the foot well under and behind the glove box. I secured the wires with a couple wire ties and routed it down behind the plastic cover on the side.
