I’ve just published a short piece looking at the Kompressor era — and it got me thinking about our cars in particular.
The R170 and early R171 SLKs weren’t headline power machines, but the 200K and 230K had something distinctive: instant throttle response, linear delivery, and that faint supercharger whine that makes the car feel alive even at modest speeds.
On paper the later CGI turbo cars were quicker and more efficient. But the character changed. The power became smoother, more uniform — arguably less mechanical.
So a question for fellow SLK owners:
• Does the Kompressor give the SLK part of its identity?
• If you’ve driven both, did the turbo feel like an upgrade or just different?
• Would you choose a well-sorted 200K over a later turbo purely for the driving experience?

Interested to hear how others see it — especially those who’ve lived with these engines long term.
