Requesting advice/opinions on frequency of operating the Vario roof

I've been reading of the many often complex repair issues that the Vario roof can offer up, which encourages me to be conservative in cycling up and down. Yet the convertible hardtop is perhaps the top 'joy' of having an SLK. One earlier thread explored how many days folks drove in a row with the top down. Some apparently cycled (at least once) almost every day, year around, which makes me feel I can freely cycle whenever I park the car. I've been looking into a cockpit cover (another thread) as a way to reduce cycling, but the push of a button sure would be easier and prettier.

I'd appreciate any input, preferably with some experience or data behind it, on how reliable the roof has proven to be, especially in the R172.

I live in Florida. My top goes up and down on every ride.

Mercedes-Benz SLK Vario-roof is generally designed and tested for roughly 10,000 to 20,000 cycles. However, time and lack of maintenance cause failures long before reaching a strict cycle limit. Most roof problems happen due to aging hydraulic seals, weak pumps, or low fluid levels rather than mechanical wear out. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Roof play a must for me.
Only exception is after heavy shower and standing water.

Been flooded (roof up at time) by an f150/ranger type overtaking on inside and coming through my slightly open driver window.
Couldn’t even note his reg as keeping control was priority.
Never again.

Thanks again. I've looked through the links you provided and feel more confident in the roof already. Just got the car and will replace batteries, tires, and have the dealer check/update the software. I completely rebuilt, repainted, reupholstered my mid-life car - an MGB; now that I am 83 I'll split car work with professionals, especially considering the huge difference in complexity between a '72 British car and the SLK.

We don't know what SLK you have NOR where you are (both of which helps us help you) so:

It's to your benefit and is much easier for members to see your car (YEAR SLK "MODEL" and nothing else) details in Vehicle Details and where you live in "Location".

so the best method to update is:

click and follow the instructions FOUND HERE to update your profile.

If you have problems figuring out how to update your profile, just click

"REPORT" (3 buttons top right in this post)

and we'll help you out.

Once done, we will relocate this thread.
