This is a great video on how & why your pump fails, causing your soft close to fail and detailing potential ensuing problems (think top inop).

Best of all he describes a DIY method to remedy the issue for little to no Dollars/Euros/Leks/Rubles/Deutsche Marks/Pesos……you get the idea……

Me too, which is why I’m here. I think the pump in the vid differs from my 05 55 but perhaps the principles are the same. I have noticed one of the ‘wings’ on my top feels a bit ‘soggy’ (floppy). According to this vid this can lead to too function failure. Bummer…

To repeat: soft close?

The only soft close I have ever experienced is when the roof is operating/lid opening & closing. Other than that, never.

No soft close of doors or boot/trunk on any SLK/SLC as I know of. My R231 63 AMG has it but it's totally useless. The boot/trunk closes with hydraulics, the doors close as normal with a slam unless you miss the closing and only nudge the B-pillar with the door. But who does that?

No, no, all good. It's all good knowledge. I don't think any of our 171's have a pneumatic system. Good thing too. The plastic that they used becomes very brittle with age and heat. My first A-Class had pneumatic door locks. Any work done in that area had to be done quickly because most parts became NLA very early on. I ended up using bits from a hydroponic irrigation system to fix it!
