Cover for the interior of a SLK 250 R172 - tonneau

I've found 'interior covers' for the R170 SLK, but want one for my 2015 R172. I'm looking for something that would work like the tonneau covers of earlier generations of British sports cars, and were handy for keeping sun off and debris out of the cockpit, short of putting the top up. That is, I don't need it to be capable of handling a rainstorm. There's discussion from 2017 about the merits and availability of R 170 cockpit covers on this board.

The vendors tell me the covers for earlier SLKs won't fit; I'm wondering how different the cockpit dimensions are, and whether they're close enough that a R170 cover could be adapted more easily than cobbling one up from scratch. The most apparent thing is the roll bars of the newer cars, but they're not much higher than the headrests.

If anyone has experience with this issue I'd like to hear of it!

No, an R170 tonneau or trunk/cargo cover will not fit an R172 Mercedes SLK.

Why They Do Not Fit
    • Different Generations: The R170 (1996–2004) and the R172 (2011–2020) are completely different vehicle generations.
    • Body and Dimension Changes: The interior cabin dimensions, roll bar placement, and rear trunk/deck geometry changed significantly between the two models. Parts made specifically for the R170 body style do not align with R172 factory mounting points.

Compatibility Facts
    • Generation Span: R170 parts only interchange across the 1996–2004 production run.
    • Generation Span: R172 parts are exclusive to the 2011–2020 body style

I was kind of hoping that cockpit covers, being just fabric with velcro strapping around mirrors and door handles, might pretty much serve the purpose. Sounds like I'll have to start with sewing up something that will drape over the roll bars and headrests, then hook to the windshiel and strap to the mirrors. Thanks for the info.

Now I see that interior covers are also available for the R 171 (showing up to 2009). These have the rollbar, so maybe the fit would be closer?? Covercraft Polycotton Convertible Interior Cover IC2027PD.

they only do E and SL classes no slk/slc

Thanks for pointing this out; I would have wasted an order. By the way, thanks also for taking on this excellent forum. I admire my 'new' SLK and hope to keep it the rest of my life (or its like, whichever comes first).
Don't know where you are but good canvas shop can make anything.
Would also be able to obtain soft material, no scratch.

Interesting discussion about these covers for when parked. I am tempted, but they are nothing like the tonneau covers of old British sports cars.
I had a mid ‘70’s MG midget with the full and half tonneau. It fitted on to studs on the dash and poppers around the rear of the hood. It was very strong vinyl with headrest covers sewn in, and had a zip so you could roll one side back and drive the car.
I did this many times in winter at some higher speeds and always so warm and snug in my little bubble of hot air.
It was a fantastic thing, but no doubt lost in the corporate car world of accountants.

+1
Almost made the car feel like a single seater.

@kayaker

We don't know what SLK you have NOR where you are (both of which helps us help you) so:

It's to your benefit and is much easier for members to see your car (YEAR SLK "MODEL" and nothing else) details in Vehicle Details and where you live in "Location".

so the best method to update is:

click and follow the instructions FOUND HERE to update your profile.

If you have problems figuring out how to update your profile, just click

"REPORT" (3 buttons top right in this post)

and we'll help you out.

Once done, we will relocate this thread.
