Managed to scoop a Dell Latitude D630 for 60.00 locally.

Wondering if there a reputable source for a HD w/ SDS installed, or do I have to rough it and install my self?

Intending to p/u a MUX towards this fall, but would like to have the factory manual and parts lookup while I budget for that.

Good info. Thanks,

I read tons off the stickies, but missed that tidbit. Not confident "narrow" in this context bodes well.
Are you referring to the manufacturer date of the notebook Hardware itself? Is there a post somewhere that references this date window, or a known workaround?
I'll have to check that when I get home today.

I'm very new at this, so let me know if there's anything I can be proactive about in preparing this machine. I really thought it would be as easy as removing the installed hard drive, and replacing it.

i may be able to send you a hard disk with the C3 version installed if you split my recent cost for it! plus the cost of a ssd to duplicate it to. I have an ssd installed in my 630 and the original drive with DAS xentry etc stored in a anti static bag! Your cost $150 plus shipping plus ssd drive. it needs just a small ssd under 100gb. Where are you?

I tried NG and it didn’t work. The status was successful and the data was with Kb of a difference. But the “new” drive did not work windows and all starts, but when time for c3 connection and magic=no go. Try it yourself and if it is successful please advise what edition of NG or any specifics…

i'm mac based and would use a mac app to do the cloning. As for trying, i've got no reason to spend my time having 2 working drives! I know the clone was made by an American local friend of the fellow I got my system from so it could not have been that difficult. You must be missing something in your process or you have to mod a benz system config file and theres several of them.
Here I am on the right from 1989! I worked for Dr Robert Metcalfe,
co-inventor of ethernet. Went back to school to get my EE after being a mechanic and auto shop teacher for many years.

Well the NG is a bootable CD and both drives are attached to the Mo-Bo. After one select the read from and the write to, the NG does it all.

I used to have my winXP, 7 and 10 as ISO on external device (laptop was 160BG), but the laptop gave up the holly ghost and all was kept on external HDD. Few years back I removed all them ISO files and untill that moment (as I had no CD ROM on my desktop for over a decade) I never tried it. But having an old working station that was to be "recycled" I got a dvd-burner and then tried it.
So... nothing that a person can mess up when the process starts.
The Dell itself has no security (BIOS based) whatsoever so plug and play at its best.
And because all is "own-risk" I still have the mirror-image of the working one. Who knows!

Ghost should work fine for windows XP and Windows 7. After that no. Older SSD will also work fine. I was a Dell tech so I think I might have the OEM software. What do you need. Not much new stuff will work on it either. I use mine to align cameras on a security system. Linux software also does not have drivers for its standard hardwire.
