Oil pressure idiot light (update of a VERY old thread)

One of my first questions here was "How do I do a oil pressure light (or a prper gauge). After some time, I have actually done this.
The pressure sender is set to close at 0.25 bar (most pressure sensors of the automotive kind have the pressure limit stamped somewhere on the body). The sensor/sender is a M10x1,5 (metric fine thread) a 27 NPT will work perfectly well. The sender is screwed into the oil filter top, exactly in the center. It will not interfere with the oil filter seal, and being in the dead middle, it will sense the pressure before the filter. With a dirty filter, the pressure may rise and it will be slightly less flow - but that long will no SLK members oil filter go unchanged, I think.

The electric part is very simple. The sender is earthed in a suitable part, in my case the casing for the thermostat. From the sender, earth goes by wire to a red, self flashing LED, located in the dash. The LED ha its positive lead to a piggyback fuseholder together with the Tempomat. A suitable resistor is around 800 Ohm. 640 work as well. The LED awaits a 10 cent LED holder. The (unsymmetric) symbol is a DIY sticky decal until final installation.

To facilitate oil filter change without unduly disturb the connection between oil filter cap and the sensor (Sensor is metal, lid is plastic - so female thread is also plastic. Removing the sensor on a regular basis may be a bad idea), Therefore, the oil filter wrench top has a hole and a handle is welded on top.

It's something I missed. WHY you need that?
The manual you had (mentioned about MB mechanics) is probably for whenever the engine has ..serious issues or higher mileage. Are you doing it for "just in case" or your engine goes to 3-400 000 miles and you are worried?
In case they intend to use it as a measuring tool, I don't think it is meant to stay attached there. Like the gearbox oil dipstick!

I think it is a relevant question.

I have it for "peace of mind". I have NEVER seen the "low oil" warning light up (more than when starting the engine) and theoretically, all should be well if there is oil in the oil pan. However, oil pressure can be lost without oil escaping the oil pan (for instance, if the oil pump stops working - it´s driven by a chain). Then, I´m also used to have a oil pressure lamp, want to have a pressure indication and the actual cost was 50 kr/5 dollars/5 pounds for a spare oil filter top from the breakers, a LED, wiring and a cable sheath from a secret stash of similar stuff in my garage... :)

Mercedes shops have their own filter top with a mechanical gauge, they don´t want my DIY solution (and it would not tell them what they (and you, and I) want to know if all is not well.

The solution works for a proper VDO pressure sender, BTW. I made the hole in the filter socket big enough, and I have two wires located near the dash. What bugs me there is that there is no suitable place for a gauge. SAo, an annoying flashing LED, it is.

I have no steering adjusted either - guessing was too expensive extra!
There are tracks providing + and - for each bulb. The - is common and as you guessing correctly it will be devastating to fry that circuit.
So I would use 2extra wires (lan cable ones are my1st choice) glued over the original tracks and insulation tape (plastic card) in between the contacts do them sockets. Thin wire (lan cable) and good soldering iron should be sufficient for the “surgery” On the opposite of the contacts side.

OR just 2 wires and a ”flying“ bulb that needs to be disconnected before removing the IC off its place. With no taping, glueing…etc.

Thanks to @M4rCu5 you can see the back if you haven’t had the pleasure yet, right here:

That “sticker” of yours - Aladdin’s Lamp one - should fit on top of the other one. But to the best of my knowledge I had few ”prepared” and not used slots. You will know when you take it off. Or Mark can share some of his pics, showing different years models, etc.
