Hi Guys,

The Background :-

My last project, a low mileage W220 S Class which was wrecked by several local garages blowing up many modules with a power probe in an attempt to fix what turned out to be a faulty TCU :biglaugh:

I bought that Car around 3 years ago in a state of disassembly, just because someone in another local Garage said I'd never get it going 😉

It was running and MOT'd within 3 months despite having been stood in a Barn for 3 years and various bits were stripped out and just chucked in the Boot etc.

I then drove it around for a month or 2 and fell in love with it, so then decided to return it to concourse, I started off by stripping everything underneath and Undersealing (Schutzing) it, Waxoyling the cavities, etc and then time to start on the Bodywork. A little knock / scratch / scab here and there from standing in the Barn :(

I've also incorporated stuff like Android Multimedia, Facelift Lamps, Custom Exhaust and Mild Tune, Head Rest Screens with connection to Android, Full 4G Internet USB Charging Sockets etc etc.

It turned into almost a ground up restoration is now almost complete, should be totally finished after my 3 week Xmas Shutdown. and I'm already looking for the next project 😁

I currently have a V6 SLK in my Workshops, for Auto Box and ESP Problem, and after sorting the Gearbox and taking it for a test drive I thought hell, this is no "Hairdressers Convertible" >:D

Me want one to add to my MB Collection, (I currently own 3 roadworthy MB Cars) 😁

I found and put deposits on 2 Cars this week only to have my deposits returned by unscrupulous sellers because obviously they had had better offers.
These Cars were a fair way away from the remote area i live in, and they had both agreed to hold them for 2 weeks until I could get to see / buy / collect.

I'll have my SLK before long though, trying to do a deal on 1 of 2 possibles atm ;)

So, I got a load of work done today and had some time to play, hence out came the "Old" 2012 SDS and in came the R170 that I'm still waiting on a Yaw Sensor from MB Dealers.

I think it would be fair to say any of us who know Mercedes Cars will agree, by using a V6 Car as a base, dropping in a V8 from a mechanical perspective will be an absolute doddle using standard MB Parts ........................

Problems will arise when it comes to the Electronics !!

As others who have trodden this path have found, specifically with getting all the Electronics to talk to each other over CAN Bus, and also the Car builder needs to understand how the Immobilizer System works, and also the ramifications of the fact that the R170 uses DAS 2 Drive Authorisation (Mechanical Key Blade), and V8's such as W220 use DAS 3 (Infra Red Key / EIS).

I decided to look at compatibility with Electronics, Version Codings etc.

Here is my findings :-

Use the ECU from the V6 Car, now all Immo (DAS) issues are removed from the equation as well as things like the CAN Comms between ME and Instrument Cluster, ESP ABS TCU etc etc, because this V6 ECU is already matched to the Cars other Electronics !!

WHAT !! I hear you cry, but the V8 has 2 extra Injectors and Coils and being a 5.0 liter it will need different fuelling and timing etc that won't work !!

Oh yes it will, MB thoughtfully included other Engine Variants in the ECU's Programming, so all one has to do is use SDS to change the ECU Version Coding to M113 E50 🤓 EDIT :_ It isn't quite that simple see my findings in post #3, but still looking very do able !!

Transmission Control Unit Coding is a little harder, it isn't spelled out in plain English, when replacing these one needs a (not identical) but compatible part number TCU and copy the Coding from old TCU to replacement so yeah, one way or another Trans is no issue :|

I do have a sneaky feeling that by using the TCU that is on the V6 Car, (assuming one is keeping V6 Diff), then it's shift timing will be pretty close if not the same, and then Diff Ratios and Trans Gear Implausible issues will not be a problem.

I'm not certain if V6 and V8 Trannys have the same ratio Gearset, and I haven't checked the Diff Ratios either, will need to compare part numbers on WIS EPC, but none of this is an issue, by using the correct combination of parts and a little playing with Version Codings I am 101% certain that it will work 😁

If it turned into an issue I personally would fit a V6 Tranny Gearset into the V8 Trans, because that maybe has extra Clutches in it's packs to take the extra torque, or if one wishes to use the V8 TCU with V8 Trans and V8 Diff, then that should not create conflict either !!
I think for a Road Car the Diff from the V8 Car would be the one to use, again though there are a load of Codings that can be set in the ME ECU to alter Ratios and Tyre Sizes, and I believe that also applies to the TCU Coding from my experience with the S Class TCU. I expect I could get that info from MB as the TCU is a numerical Coding rather than Verbal on SDS Screen so I'd just need to know what number represents what (decode it) as it were ;)

Auto Transmissions used to be my Trade before I sold up in SE England and semi retired to NW Scotland.

ABS ESP and BAS require no version Coding, so although they Communicate to ME and probably TCU via CAN Bus they can be considered "Stand Alone" and therefore need no messing with.

Below are a load of pics from this afternoons session on SDS ;)

I'll be back soon with some more info when I've Compared the Wiring Plugs between a V8 ME 2.8 and the R170 V6 ME 2.8, my fingers are crossed right now 😁

Cheers Dave

Piccies :-

So can the ol' bear do this in a one'er ...................

Card Template cut, Steel marked up :D

I'll cut it full size first and see :p

OK, well I could in theory do it in one piece, but I'd then have to drill out the spot welds on the ABS / ESP Pumps bracket, so in reality it will be easier to cut it in half, the joint weld will be virtually invisible once I've done and the Pump Motor hangs over that area any how (y), so that's the front half cut and prepped, will fire up the Welder the morra ;) .....................

That's this MOT's D15KOE Welding all done on the left front Inner Wheelarch, from Bulkhead to just behind Headlamp, all I'm waiting on now is the Rioja Red Base Coat to paint it where it is visible under the Bonnet (y)

Welds seam sealed from both under the arch and under bonnet ....

Thick Epoxy Primer all the way from Bulkhead to Headlamp area under Bonnet ....

And Schutzed the repair area under the front wing / wheel well area ....

So that's the D15KOE all ready for his MOT Test in a couple of weeks time, he should pass OK :D

Of course some time between now and next year I expect the right side will need doing, but no holes yet :p

I'm hoping the Rioja Red Base Coat turns up tomorrow, if not I'm gonna have to re-assemble and park D15KOE outside as I did no work at all this week other than D15KOE MOT jobs, so now have 3 vehicles all with loadsa work to do next week 🤣 That's why I like Epoxy Primer, because it's waterproof, unlike normal Primers that are porous, ya cannae leave them out in the rain ;)

TBH it's only around an hour to put everything back together ;)

Not yet, should be in any day now.
D15KOE is all back together now as Workshop is nuts busy, but won't take long to move a few bits outta the way and mask up, it will just look a lot tidier when done ;)

I just gave the Spare Wheel a quick refurb paint job, etch primer, wheel silver and clear coat ...............

I recently fitted this rim with a matching Tyre for the big chunkies already on the D15KOE, the rim was rough as a Bears 'arris, not one of my best Wheel jobs, but didn't take much time prepping and looks a whole lot better now than wot it did B4 :D ....

That rim looks wayyyyyy too nice for that rubber 🤔
🤣 It was never my intention to turn the D15KOE into a concours example, what I am ending up with is a very soild, uber reliable and extremely tidy Discovery 2 with a few nice upgrades, a vehicle which I'm not scared of using to his max as and when the need arises (y)
Slowly slowly with planned repairs strategy, this old D15KOE will be with me until the DVLA say I can't drive any more ;)

I promise y'all after a week or 2 of Heilan rainfall that Tyre will be clean as ;)

It was just a £40.00 part worn Tyre I picked up, because the "Spare" on the back of the D15KOE was a way smaller 16" Road Tyre on a different style Rim (roughly 4" DIAMETER different), so in UK it is illegal to carry it as there is intent to use it, therefore it should also fail an MOT test. That much difference doesn't do Diff Planet gears much good either especially if I got a flat far far away.

So as his MOT is at month end, he's just had more work and improvements, I now have a good use-able and matching spare which I have just fitted on the Carrier together with the correct Discovery 2 rear Wiper Arm, this has the Washer Jet built in, as opposed to the one fitted by previous inepts which just had the Washer Tubing cable tied to an old metal Discovery 1 Arm

Old vs "New" spare Wheels ....

Did the red paint come in?
Finally !!

A couple of litres of Rioja Red just turned up, which should be enough to do the Inner Wheel arch repair areas under the bonnet where they show both sides and also 3 small local repairs around the Bodywork when I get to 'em (y)

Better go do some work now :D

LOL, that's kinda difficult since I can't take pics when painting, and Mel won't wanna be in there with an Air Fed mask while I'm doing it.

You'll have to wait until I do some of the SLK's Panels and we'll find a Tripod for the Video Camera ;)

Anyhow this small inner wing area will likely get done in the main Workshop as it isn't "finish" critical, most mfrs, MB and Land Rover included don't even Clear Coat under Bonnet areas etc ;)

Ah, well, a bit of time for "Dave" Cars has opened up ...................

I managed to get 2 big jobs out this week, a Land Rover 110 Defender and a VW Caddy van, also done a couple of Diagnostics, now awaiting parts, so the only other thing that would have been done this week is a 4.4 V8 Diesel Range Rover, Belts chirping and Brake noise / vibe, yet to be investigated when it comes on the lift for the Belt and Pulleys Job, parts are on order won't be here until next week. This one has 2 Belts, one with the usual Spring tensioner and another 3 idler pulleys, plus a smaller secondary Belt that just drives the Viscous Fan / Water Pump, that one has one Idler Pulley ;)

So that is 2 ribbed belts, 1 tensioner assy and 4 pulleys in total :ROFLMAO: Can ya see where we are going wi' this ................

How much d'yas reckon for the bits alone  I say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat !! Well north of £600, and then there will be humongous amounts of dismantling and foul language just to fit it all .....................
I'll tell ye what, you wouldn't change a Belt on one of these things at the Roadside 🙃 And then I have a nasty feeling he's gonna need Front discs and Pads and at least one monster 6 pot Caliper :ROFLMAO:
I also have a few more Diag's to do next week and then the rectification works, so that's all very good and better turnover for the 1st 1/4 this year ...................

But, back to my Cars ..........................

I now have only a quick Diagnosis to do before the weekend, so tomorrow will see me doing a rattly Rollbar Link on our W212 AMG Wagon, plus a post winter Vehicle check including pre MOT check, I don't think it'll need owt for the test other than the Rollbar Link, the MOT is booked just a few days after D15KOE who is in on Feb 27th !!

So, it will be out with the Paint Gun on the D15KOE Inner Wheelarch repair as well and then a day out for Mel and I on Saturday, visit MIL in the morning then lunch and hit some shops in Inverness for the arvo :)

So Richard @Squishband might at least get some pictures of a Paint Gun and a D15KOE inner wing B4 and after ;)

At this rate I best order 4lt of 372 Lazulithe Blau and start painting the chip / rust free Roof Panels and front Screen Pillar Trims for my SLK V8 soon :D :D :D ...............

Heaven knows they have gathered enough dust as they've been here so looooooooooooooooooong :p

C'm 'ere ................ There's more :D .....................

How much y'all reckon for ONE 6 pot Brembo front Caliper for that 4.4 V8 Diesel L322 Range Rover (2011) .............................

I just fell over .........................................

£1024.68

Front Pads £407.04
380mm Vented Front Discs are a steal at just £120.78 each !!

These are all genuine Land Rover prices

This fella bought it new, it's low miles, and being a "retired Airline Pilot dont'cha know owld boy" he insists on always Genuine LR parts ...................

I like him, really good customer ;)
It may well need a pair of Calipers too !!
Looks like it's gonna be a very good 1st quarter for wa :D

And no, I won't be scrapping the old ones, I'll make sure to pop all 6 pistons before disconnecting them from the Hoses, be cool to re furb 'em and use them on some mental future project :D :D :D I'm pretty sure they won't fit under the 18" Wheels on the V8 R170 tho 😭

Mind that Car stands on end wiv the 4 Pot Brembo's it's already got fitted !!

I've got the same 4 pot 345mm fronts as you. I am looking forward to stepping up to the 360mm/6-pots.
To be fair you likely need 360mm with the 55 Kompressor V8 ;)

These Range Rover jobbies are 380mm Discs, the RR is running 20" Rims and there isn't a lot of clearance between the 6 pot Calipers and the 20's 🤣

My V8 SLK's 18" fronts with 235 / 40's only just clear the inner arches on lock, so I seriously doubt I'd get a 20" rim under there ;)

A Sense Of Deja Vu

So 11 months ago I fitted 2 new Avon ZV7's to the rear end of our AMG Wagon when it was MOT time last March.

This morning I replaced both front Antirollbar Links for it's forthcoming MOT in March, shortly after the D15KOE.
I also took the liberty of spending a while checking it out for the forthcoming MOT test, no faults at all ..................

Except ..... Both rear Tyres absolutely bald as a badgers 'arris in the middle section, well, below the wear bars :(

This is exactly what it did to the previous set, there are no suspension issues, and to be certain I gave it a full alignment check as well this morning, spot on !! The front Tyres (also ZV7's) were replaced the previous year and are only half worn :(
The rears on the AMG Wagon are 265/35 x 18, rears have done 19k miles since last replaced, but FFS, I'm not gonna keep chucking ZV7's at it so I'm gonna try some different rubber on it this time.
JJC Race and Rally have just got a sale on a pair of 265/35/18 97Y XL Falken Azenis FK520 Performance tyres, £100 cheaper posted up to me than the ZV7's were last year, and they have all the same ratings as the ZV7's too, in fact a slightly lower dB ;) ....................................... Time will tell, but if I'm gonna trash rear Tyres annually on that car then I might as well wreck some decent but cheaper rubber eh !!

Then the Deja Vu came to me, many years ago I had an old W210 E300 Turbodiesel Wagon, and that thing used to wreck rear Tyres in exactly the same way, it seems this is a W212 thing as well if a bit of searching around can be believed :ROFLMAO:

The D15KOE is now in da bulding, will start stripping around the area to be painted later today after I've picked Mel up, hopefully with no more rattle from the front right of the W212 Wagon, which has been annoying the hell outta me for the past few weeks since yet another Pot Hole

TTFN from Dave who is now 300 squids lighter for a pair of Tyres :(

I’ll have a check of my 7V7s in the daylight tomorrow - running them on both the Little Growler and Beige - mind, I doubt the 1.8 Kompressor in both of them (R171 and W204 wagon respectively) will be shedding any rubber any time soon 😂

Ahhhh, well, no spanners thrown ....................

I did think that when the original rears clapped out their middles, and bearing in mind the lowest pressure settings MB quote for the car is with 3 passengers and their 3 bags (265/35 x 18) 230kPa rear which = 33.4 psi ....

Tire Automotive tire Motor vehicle Bumper Vehicle

....

I have been running 30 psi Rear and 29 psi in the Fronts because I too went for the number one cause of centre tread wear this time last year and it is very rare that the Car ever has anyone sat in the rear, in fact half it's miles it only has a Driver :p

As said, I've no complaints about the fronts, they were fitted at least 2 years ago and have done more miles, still only ~ half worn

However 19k miles on the rears is absurd, especially since I ahem cough cough never ever drive it sideways with the Tyres alight :D :D :D
well OK that last bit is a slight exaggeration, but seeing as Mel drives it more than I do, so at least half that mileage is done at 40 - 60 mph I think that scrapping a pair of rear Tyres inside 11 months is a bit excessive .......................

However, seeing as a whole bunch of other W212 / S212 owners are saying that their Cars are clapping out rears in the same fashion, I think IRMC that these Cars are just heavy on rear Tyres.

It would seem that the Falken Azenis FK520 Tyres I just chose today for this car were tested by a fellow Hoonigan on the W212 and rated for the car at number 3 out of 20 brands (the top rated being Pirellis and Contisports at numbers 1 & 2 ), also they didn't test the Avon ZV7's so we'll just have to see if I'm still fuming next this time next year 🤣

Mind you, as we all know, it certainly all depends who it was who wrote the reviews, because some dumb ass also rated Landsail (chinesium ditchfinders I do believe) as good on his W212, so obviously he doesn't get outta 3rd cog on his 7G Trans when he drives 3 miles a day on a straight dry A road 🙃 🙃 🙃

I'll go for the fellow Hoonigans review, suck it up and see, two Falkens are on their way outta JJC's door as we speak ';)

Rollbar links have gotten rid of the wee rattle, so at least that was worth doing, the Car is just driving so sweet again now, exactly as it did when I did the Rear Shox just B4 our Crimble trip south, and right up until I hit yet another pothole a few weeks back when we were off along the "North Road" to visit MIL.

If I don't finish the D15KOE's inner Wing Paintwork tomorrow I'll have to take the E Class Saturday, see if I can avoid the fu blasted Potholes, which is TBF an almost impossible task on most roads atm 😭
