🤷‍♂️
Well, that one piece, (about 1/3 of the replacement piece for left rear inner arch), it wasn't a great fit, but it's in there, I now only have a few hours left until the car has to be put away in the garage until further notice, as I have a ton of work booked in from tomorrow onwards ;)

I'll see if i can finish welding that piece and maybe get another section fabbed and tacked in, I gave up in disgust yesterday evening.

Someone seriously needs to start producing inner wheel-arches for R170's, this is gonna kill 'em all off soon :(
What a daft pain that would be, if for the want of a simple stamped part (that’s a complete PITTs to manufacture from sheet), 170s stopped being roadworthy.

Put another way, it's not so much about road-worthiness, although MOT test could well be an issue, (see below), but IMHO it is about the time taken to do this job properly, a Panel Shop would charge a fortune !!

A lot of R170's need outer rear Wheel-arches, which you can get from Poland, if the outers are rotten so will be at least 2" to 3" inwards of the rear inner Arches, and if left and just outers are welded in and painted, then the B Pillar and rear lower corners perhaps even the Boot will get road water in from the rotating Tyre, and the car will rot as this one has and be a total scrapper.

Also most MOT Testers would fail inner Wheel-arches, because it is a monocoque shell and they are within a certain distance of Seatbelt Mounts, Subframe Mounts, Jacking Points etc :(

It may be worthwhile cutting these sections out of a good shell in a scrap yard, and then trimming them and approaching one of the aftermarket Panel Mfrs to see if they would make some for us with R170's as a collective.

I would have done that if I had a scrappy near me, but the only one I know that has some rust free shells right now is a 600 mile round trip ;)

I have just sent this to the Polish Guy who supplies Outer Arches .............

Hello :)

Do you know of anyone manufacturing, or can you get Inner Rear Wheel-arch panels for Mercedes R170 SLK ?

I have bought outers from yourself for 2 of my R170 cars now, but it is a real pain having to fabricate these inners from flat sheet, and also I am a very active member of SLK World, I am pretty sure we could get a reasonable sized order together ;)

Any ideas, perhaps you even know of one from another car that we could buy and adapt without too much work ;)

I have another R170 that is going to need them doing soon.

Thanks @M4rCu5 I wasn't sure of the exact figure (y)

So really then, if there is a hole anywhere in that rear inner Arch that is a fail ;)

I'm now half way, all fully seam welded, gotta go out shortly, but will hopefully get it buffed up and get some pics later ;)

The next half I'm going to do in 2 pieces, easier to manipulate around the curves ;)

I think I'm right in saying that it's 30cm or 12" give or take of suspension and the other points that you mentioned .. creeping rust heading for the front turrets could also be an issue further down the line, another potential PITA but a sight easier than what you've had to deal with so far 🧐

Fitzee's Fabrications on YT provides some great entertainment if you get the chance to put your feet up for a few ;)

Polish Guys cannot get them and don't want to / can't get them made up.

I have a piece of one I cut off this rust bucket, (well former rust bucket), i will keep it and when I get time will look at fabricating at least 2 using one of my new 1/4 panels as a pattern before I attack the V8 Car ;)

I have a feeling it will be a lot easier to do on the bench, and not on the car, think I should have done them before I welded the Arches on .................

Ho Hum, learning curve etc ;)

I didn't get a chance to get pics, workshop is now mental, booked up for 3 weeks solid now, all sound like hassle jobs, so the Silver V6 HE is now tucked up in the garage, will try and finish it this weekend ;)

Well what a busy week, everything has gone home to its rightful now, so the only thing left for today was to sort out the non opening roof (new microswitch on Roof Latch) on an R171 350 V6 ....

That's that fixed then :) 1 more job left on it for Monday and that can go home, it needs a new Thermostat assembly, they have an Electric Heating Element in them which is ECU controlled and helps maintain steady Coolant Temperature, of course it wasn't in stock so will arrive Monday ;)

So the Silver V6 HE is now on the lift ready for the last bit of welding tomorrow, then I will be on the Paint Prep phase :) ....

I'm off out now, need to restock Bear snax and beer fridge ;)

Woo Hoo ................

The moment we all been waiting for ................

The last bit of welding on the former rust bucket Titanic Silver V6 HE is now finished 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️

It is now "Solid all steel shell" Silver V6 HE :D :D :D

Welds have been buffed with Grinder, just need a final tickle with the wee 2" Air Buffer before Seam Sealer and Schutzing :)

Going clockwise from the rear bumper edge ....

That little lot ended up being reconstructed in 4 separate pieces, and plenty of slits to enable me to shape it all as I went around, definitely not easy, and I'm definitely not doing another one this way

The red marks (only one of 2 visible in pixels), have to be drilled through to take rubber bungs for waxoyling access and the 3 nuts are just there so I didn't hit the captive bolt I welded in on this side for the bumper edge .................

That bolt had to go around 1.5" further back on this side, (i.e. inside the Boot rather than under the Wheel-arch), because tha's 'ole in 't' Plastiche Bumper edge was mullered by the previous inept botch artist when he fibre-glassed it all together :(

I got most of tomorrow to hopefully get it all undersealed that side then it'll have to be put away in the Garage for the busy week ahead ;)

Just got an R171 Thermostat to do tomorrow, and Invoice it and send it on it's merry way :)

TTFN, it's Beer 'O' Clock ;)

The modern day junk that I get into my workshop never ceases to amaze me ...........................

This is the first one of these I've ever had the dubious "pleasure" to look at close up ....

Proudly proclaimed as his "new" (2016) Mercedes - Benz Citan ...........

Well, OK there's a possible argument that it's better than the old Green A Class CDI that he had, (who all remembers that thing from my workshop tales) :ROFLMAO:

This wonderful MB produce is actually a Renault Kangoo Van, with Mercedes Badges, Front Wings, Bonnet and "Face" that's it ................

Renault 1.5 DCI Engine, Cogbox, all running gear, "Electoniques par excellence", bloomin Renault "everything" from the A Pillars backwards ........................................................

Intermittent No Start, lets see how SDS gets on wi' that one, (or perhaps I should just plug it into my Renault CAN Clip Dealer Level machine)

l8'rs ...............

Citan is at the real PIT Butt stage :(

It's gonna get 2 more hours research and fiddling, seems like a bad Relay, but my current research level suggests after 2014 (this one is a 2016) they don't have proper, (read separate) Relays, the newer ones have an Electronic Fuseamabob Module, sealed up, part of Immo, a BSI Module is the French terminology, and that is what switches stuff ...................

Remember this is all Renault Kangoo / Nissan Kubistar Electronics, which I know from bitter experience are a royal pain 😭

Pah pants !!

Also, added to the mix for more bloody hassle, this Van has only just been bought used, from a used van dealer 200 odd miles away, and he is now involved wanting prices, which I can't tell him without actually doing the work, it will probably end up customer pays me up to date, then take the naffin' heap back to the Dealer and either they fix it or give the man a full refund under the UK's CRA, (they get one attempt to fix, then he can demand a full refund because Van is not fit for purpose) ;)

That's average of 20k per year, tbh I'd expect a small Van to run that sorta miles in UK, I have worked on refrigerated Sprinter Vans that do the "live Prawns run" from Kyle to Manchester, those things have done 65 - 70k per year and due to the Sea Water containers that they transport the Prawns in they are absolutely fubar by 4 years old, if they make it to 4 years old ;)

Sooooo the Satan, I mean Citan, I pronounce it "sigh-tan" Mercedes dealer say "cee-tan" .................. But as usual I digress :ROFLMAO: ...............

When I went to move the horror on Monday evening it was totally clear of codes and I had driven it all day with no fault, lot's of different destinations, switch off, lock it, do shopping back tuit, start it, move on to next place etc etc etc ............. Never missed a beat, started first time every time ;)

So I hop in it Monday eve to move it, turn key, dash lights up as it should, as I move the key to "Start" pos 3 the steering wheel gives a little shudder but it wont crank ............
Many repeated attempts, same result, just as the customer says, then suddenly just as I'm about to give up in disgust, it starts, and now once agin it starts every time (atm).

Was busy yesterday and earlier today, but last thing yesterday I got another SDS Xentry read on it, only one code has come back since I cleared them all early Monday morning ....................

B152313 "Key Transponder Reader Ring open circuit" ....

It is now showing as a historic rather than a current code because I got it to start since the fault happened to me Monday evening, and again yesterday to drive it into the workshop, before connecting SDS and reading Codes

Now that seems pretty conclusive, it is a certainty that it is either the Reader Ring / Module itself or the Wiring between it and Front SAM ....

Some animal has had the Steering Wheel and Column apart before judging by the screwdriver marks in various plastic bits :(
Working out how to get the Airbag off is a distinct challenge, and even when ya know how it is still a pain ;)
This isn't just a Coil this thing is a Module that clips over the Ignition Key Lock, but my gut says I gotta change that before delving into what I know will be a nightmare .......... "The Wiring"

So have ordered the part from MB, might get here tomorrow, if not Friday, then we suck it and see what happens ;)

Did I ever mention I hate intermittent faults especially very intermittent ones ;)

I'm shocked MB allowed their badge to be used on a car with that sort of instrument cluster.

That thing looks 20 years old, nevermind being used on a 5 year old car.

IIRC they're super picky about how the car presents itself to buyers and owners, and then they go sign off this atrocity?
